Overview

The Hythe Imperial hotel is a 4-star retreat set along Hythe's stretch of shingle beach in Kent. The property was constructed in 1880 as a railway hotel, and is now coming to the end of a long-term bedroom renovation project.

Hythe belongs to The Confederation of Cinque Ports -- a collection of maritime towns that once provided military support to The Crown. Reminders of Hythe's past are everywhere -- the Royal Military Canal runs just behind the hotel. Keep an eye out for the Martello Towers, which were built as a defence against a Napoleonic invasion. Sandgate Castle is also less than 10 minutes' drive or 45 minutes' walk away.

You can hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway -- a 13-mile-long line with miniature steam and diesel trains -- which has been running between Hythe and Dungeness for almost a century. Romney Marsh, an expanse of 100 square miles once submerged beneath the English Channel, now dotted with towns, is two miles west of the hotel. The hilltop town of Rye is 40 minutes' drive away, and Dover is 20 minutes' drive.

"This imposing seafront hotel is enhanced by impressive grounds including a 13-green golf course and pleasing gardens", according to The AA Hotel Guide 2017. Other facilities include a gym, a spa, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and a swimming pool.

You can sample seasonal British cuisine in the AA-Rosette-awarded Coast Restaurant, or dine in the in-house Indian restaurant. The Moët & Chandon Bar, opened in 2016, operates Wednesday-Sunday, and serves a variety of wines and cocktails.

From the press:

Although n process of being upgraded the spaces upgraded are already looking shabby. Quality is not of the best. A very small grubby lift was the mode of transport to our room and it was difficult to know which floor we were on as digital nformation n lift was not working. The toilet in our bathroom was dirty and the sea view for which we had paid extra was obscured by a roof. We asked to be moved to a better positioned room but subsequently discovered an unwashed tooth glass in the second room. On a previous visit some years ago the hotel had a large garden. It is now covered with an estate of what appeared to be holiday homes of American themed architecture. The staff were very efficient and helpful particularly those serving breakfast - which was very good. We did not have dinner n the hotel.

The room. It was described as superior...nothing of the sort. It was small had only one dining type chair. When we asked reception why such room? the answer they gave was what do you expect for £69? I dare not think what an ordinary room would be like.
