With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and nearby South Downs countryside, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years. The Garden Restaurant, which overlooks the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes and has a large collection of local cheeses.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table said to be linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away, while Winchester Cathedral and the local shops are five minutes' away.

We recommend a stroll alongside the River Itchen from the National Trust-owned Winchester City Mill to College Street, where you can see Winchester College and the house Jane Austen lived in for the last few months of her life.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

Very limited parking. We were directed to second car park which our Sat Nav could not find. Receptionist helpful and confirmed one space available and gave us a map. Room had some maintenance issues. Our ground floor bedroom window had a broken catch so it could not be used. Room was very hot. Kettle not functioning properly. Otherwise all good value and we will return.

A lovely hotel in excellent location. 10 minute walk from train station, 3 minutes from City centre, yet very quiet. Staff extremely helpful, food outstanding. Extra quality touches, for example, 'Nespresso' machine in room, high quality toiletries. Really enjoyed this stay. Good value for money.
Other Comments
The Hotel had to be asked 3 times to take the payment on booking. The arrangement was that the full amount would required on booking, however, we had to ring up 3 times over 3 weeks, to get them to take it. This resulted in uncertainty as to whether or not our booking would be honoured.
