Why We Love It

  • This 16th-century hotel has a walled garden and is in the centre of Winchester
  • The Garden Restaurant, housed in a conservatory, boasts a wide selection of local cheeses
  • Winchester Cathedral and the local shops are within a 5-minute walk
  • Jane Austen's House Museum is a 25-minute drive away

With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and nearby South Downs countryside, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years. The Garden Restaurant, which overlooks the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes and has a large collection of local cheeses.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

Fabulous meal in the restaurant

Check in time was stated at 2pm on booking confirmation but in fact it is 3 so we had to wait before we could check in. Also we had confirmed twin rooms but were allocated doubles. The hotel sorted it out but it wasn’t a good start to the trip.

Excellent staff and very professional approach
Other Comments
Garden rooms on the first floor have a better view and are possibly less noisy if there are visitors on the lawn. Rooms are very clean and tidy, linen is excellent best towels we have seen in any UK hotels of this standard. Good selection of food at breakfast although staff struggled to keep up with demand.

breakfast was ok and location was great. Shame really - could do better.
Other Comments
Room was musty and damp , the windows were steamed up with condensation and this was running down the windows and forming puddles on the window sill. Receptionist and house manager said they had never received any other complaints about this!! which I find very difficult to believe No room in car park, so parked on road , but this finished at 8.00am so I moved my car late evening ( good job I hadn't had a drink) when space available , despite this the receptionist still charged me the FULL rate of £10.00. Sorry but was just not good enough. I will also be writing a review on Tripadvisor, maybe management may comment?

Location is great - right in the city centre. Rooms are nice and fairly roomy, but not much storage space. Hotel restaurant is OK, but there are lots of excellent places to eat within walking distance.

The bed, the food, the service, the location to city center
Other Comments
Down side the £10 charge for overnight parking, not the parking as such, as you be charged in the center of town, but not being told of charge at time of booking, that should be made clear.
