Why We Love This Hotel

  • There has been a manor on the estate since 1560. The current Georgian manor house, Wokefield Park, was built in the 1720s. Later, it was owned by the High Sherriff of Berkshire, and then served as a Catholic teaching centre.
  • The property is set in 250 acres of grounds, including lakes, woods, and formal gardens. There's an 18-hole golf course and driving range, plus walking trails to help you explore the estate.
  • Dining options include the 1560 Lounge & Bar. Located in the Mansion House, it serves breakfast, afternoon teas, and light bites. The View is a family-friendly option in Wokefield Place within the estate. Also in Wokefield Place is Benedict's Bar, which serves drinks, snacks, and light meals.
  • Other facilities at the hotel include a gym and an indoor pool.
  • Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre, a free-to-enter English Heritage site, is 15 minutes' drive away.
  • Highclere Castle, the filming location for "Downton Abbey", is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The only criticism was there was no air conditioning . There was a fan in The bedroom but it really wasn’t efficient.

Lovely grounds.
Other Comments
The Bavette steak which should be a deeply flavoured, open-textured cut prised by butchers and chefs alike was served up coated in a thick layer of what appeared to be Chinese five spice which overpowered any taste the meat might have had.

A very impressive estate in quiet countryside but close to Reading and the M4 corridor. The property had two main areas the old Mansion House which has been recently refurbished and the much more modern main hotel/spa/golf club building. We stayed in The Mansion House and dined in the main hotel as The Mansion House was hosting a large wedding/s. Our room was spacious and comfortable and our dining experience at both dinner and breakfast was excellent.

Lovely hotel and location. Great rooms and friendly staff.
Other Comments
Pace of play on the golf course was exceptionally slow (to the point we gave up). The view restaurant service poor, had to flag down staff for drinks, chase drinks and correct the incorrect bill. Food was lovely though. Very friendly staff on reception and behind the bar in the hotel.
