Solo travel - the stats
In celebration of Solo September here we've shared some of the top stats and data on solo travel:
- Solo travel is on the rise with over 13% of survey respondents saying they have embraced travelling alone more than ever in 2019 and almost half having had a solo travel experience (48%)
- 65% agree that solo travellers are financially penalised for travelling alone, with 47% of respondents saying paying a single supplement was the worst part of going solo
- 20% of Brits surveyed who have been on holiday admit that having to compromise on activities due to the people they were travelling with annoyed them the most
- Over 14% of Brits surveyed who have been on holiday and who have travelled with others admit they were frustrated not being able to do everything they wanted due to being in a group
- 17% of Brits surveyed who have been on holiday stated that not being able to switch off and relax was the most annoying thing about their last holiday with others
- Solo adventure: 43% admit to being more adventurous on a solo trip than when holidaying with family and friends
- When asked about what held them back from travelling solo, half of respondents (51%) replied that it was social anxiety, stigma of being seen alone and loneliness that held them back from travelling solo. Women come out on top for citing these reasons as a barrier to travelling alone
- Despite some concerns about solo travel social stigma, 26% of respondents admit they were more sociable on their solo trip than when holidaying with friends and family
- Why travel solo? 64% of answers were linked to wellness with the main answers being: “to take time for myself” – 30%; “to recharge my batteries” – 19%; and “self-discovery” – 15%
- When respondents were asked the best things about travelling solo the top 3 answers were: “not being answerable to anyone else” – 60%; “spending quality time with myself” – 48%; and “gaining confidence” – 30%
