Why We Love This Hotel

  • Guestrooms are named after Scottish architect and designer George Walton. You'll stay in an upgraded deluxe room with a coffee maker, mini fridge, walk-in rain shower, and unique artwork.
  • Dine on British fusion cuisine in the elegant Leetham's Brasserie. Peacock Bar features a marble-topped cocktail bar and plush sofas. There is an outdoor terrace to kick back with a drink in the warmer months.
  • A walk on the historic walls is a great way to get to know the city. You can access them at Micklegate Bar, 10 minutes' walk away.
  • York Minster is a must-see for its ornate Gothic architecture. As is the Shambles, one of the best-preserved Medieval streets in Europe.

A different hotel decoration wise, and fine if you like bold, darker colours. The room was a reasonable size and a firm mattress on the bed. I've never had a duvet which sat on top of the bed inside a huge duvet cover. It was as though it was a double duvet inside a king-sized cover. However, it didn't cause a problem sleeping. The bedroom has air-con but no heating of any sort in the bathroom (not even a heated towel rail) so it was cold to shower. Good shower with rainfall & hand-held options. A bonus was the long tiled shelf for bits and pieces, and a shaver socket. Well thought out wardrobe with hanging space, couple of drawers, safe, iron, ironing board and a 1600watt hair dryer. Another bonus was the number of power sockets (loads) so no problem finding somewhere to charge electronics. One easy chair and a hard chair at the desk meant we could sit to read. A couple of irritating cons - Small bottles of water were £2.50 each unless you were a 'silver level' rewards holder. Also, it seemed odd to put up a notice regarding reusing towels, then they were changed after our second of three nights. Housekeeping was average. Soap dispenser ran out & despite receptionist passing on to housekeeping we had to ask again when we returned in the evening for it to be replenished. Dirty spoon left on the desk.

The hotel is a 10minute walk from Micklegate, the outer edge of the City Centre, and there is a bus service along the road outside. Parking is very restricted (the car park only holds six cars) and spaces on the road are limited to 60 minutes between 8:30and 18:00. However, because we were happy to walk in to town, we chose to pay the extortionate £18 per day. Surely guests could be offered a reduced rate?? If I stayed here again, I would not use the restaurant for an evening meal. Although breakfast was ok, the meal was not brilliant. I had a chicken curry which came in a small cast iron dish that I normally get a veg side order in at a restaurant where I regularly lunch. Also I had to send it back to be heated up as it was very cool in the middle of the meat. My husband chose beef stroganoff which came with mashed potato!? Also a small portion for not a small price! The pannacotta for pud was fine. Bar prices for beer & lager ok. I must commend the reception and waiting staff who were lovely, happy to help and a smile in to the bargain!! I have to commend the staff
