Dating from Tudor times and a Victorian former mill, The Whitewater Hotel is full of character. The property sits beside the River Leven in the Lakeland village of Backbarrow. Lake Windermere is five minutes' drive away.
The Cascades Leisure Club & Spa "makes the most" of its location (The Times). "There's a striking river view from the pool and loungers".
Climb aboard the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Steam trains depart from Haverthwaite station (15 minutes' stroll away) and chug through the Leven Valley. The Lakeland Motor Museum is five minutes' walk from the hotel and has an extensive collection that traces 100 years of motor heritage. The Campbell Bluebird Exhibition features replicas of the cars and boats that smashed speed records.
Fell Foot, run by the National Trust, is five minutes' away by car. From the Grade II-listed boathouses, tread beside the water's edge on a heritage trail. Alternatively, take to the water with Windermere Lake Cruises. Departures are from Lakeside Pier, also a 5-minute drive away.

Room was spacious and view from balcony was stunning (unfortunately the double glazing in the balcony doors were both blown which restricted view when shut). Staff were very friendly and the food was very good and menu had plenty of choice in the evening.

We have visited the Lakes many times. This was the first time by a river. The view from our room was spectacular over looking the Whitewater. we had a few very small problems but were very quickly dealt with. We would visit again.

Disappointed with evening meal. It was Sunday roast with a few other choices. We had beef roast but beef was tough to cut and chew. When we booked ,the travel zoo offer said 2 course evening meal up to £33.95 value per person. We were not told that Sunday bookings was roast menu, only. Even though 3 course Sunday roast was only £25 , we were told we coukd only have 2 course and pay extra for 3 course. I told them our voucher said meal up to £33.95 per person and as the roast menu was only £25 per person for 3 course, I was not happy. They agreed we coukd then have 3 course.
This put us off ever booking a Sunday again

Excellent overnight stay with friends. Although the hotel is slightly old fashioned, it has lots of character, is clean, very quiet, staff are lovely and food is amazing. Position is fantastic right on the river next to a couple of powerful rapids. Would be lovely sat outside on a summer's day. Would definitely revisit.

The staff are pleasant and helpful . Dinner menu very good we enjoyed our dinner each night . The executive room was large with a large bathroom and clean , no dust in draws or wardrobe , but a bit tired ,in need of a refurbish. the health club very good great steam room. The only complaint we would have would be the cups supplied at breakfast buffet are badly stained and quite off-putting maybe a problem with the dishwasher. But we had a great deal with Travelzoo and very good value for money.

We had a very comfortable overnight stay at The Whitewater Hotel. The location by the river is stunning and atmospheric. After a day exploring the Lake District we enjoyed using the leisure facilities to wind down before dining. The food we had for dinner was excellent and the staff in the restaurant were courteous and helpful.

They knew it was my birthday (somehow) and there was a birthday card and some chocolates in our room, which overlooked the River Leven. The staff were wonderful and, being a Sunday, we were delighted that one of our options for dinner was a Sunday roast. It was really good.
The spa was good too. Overall, a very pleasant experience, which we would like to repeat, sometime soon. Our thanks to all staff for a lovely experience.

We arrived early knowing that our room probably wouldn't have been available, but the lovely lady on reception, pointed us to the Cascades spa and showed us the lounge, until our room was ready.

We loved our overnight stay at The Whitewater Hotel. The view of the River Leven, from our hotel room window, and the surrounding areas were stunning. We regretted not booking an additional night. The sound of the rapids, near the bridge, were just amazing. Our room was dated - but very comfortable - with crisp, white bed linen and towels. We made full use of the spa facilities. The 100sq m pool was empty whilst we swam. The sauna wasn’t particularly hot, but the steam room was delightful. The food was superbly presented, and each course was delicious. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly, helpful and accommodating. We weren’t able to stay for breakfast the following morning, as we were off to do the parkrun in Whinlatter Forest (which started at 9am). However, a picnic style breakfast was prepared for us, to pick up at Reception, on our departure. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Hotel rooms a little tired. Food was good but service a little erratic waitress told us a fish dish was not available, only to offer it to a couple who came in 15 minutes after us. Reception staff were friendly and helpful.

Hotel is in a stunning location and we were allocated a balcony room which was amazing. Food was fantastic but just lacking staff in bar area and restaurant. Staff couldn't be faulted just not enough of them.

Hotel would greatly benefit from a refurbishment. Hotel room was comfortable but extremely dated and shabby decor. Such a shame because everything else was perfect.
