"We enjoyed our short stay at the George. We found the hotel and its rooms clean and nicely decorated. We particularly enjoyed the many seating areas in the bar and restaurant. It's in a perfect location for exploring Colchester."
The George Hotel is a 500-year-old coaching inn that combines period features with modern touches. Expect exposed beams and sash windows juxtaposed with arty murals.
The hotel has a bar, a lounge, and a restaurant with a Moroccan-themed courtyard. There's also a Victorian-themed tea room, T at The George (supplements apply).
Colchester is said to be Britain's oldest city. Learn about the city's history at Colchester Castle. The 1000-year-old Norman keep houses a museum that covers more than 2500 years of history. It is less than five minutes' walk from the hotel.
Dedham Vale National Landscape is 20 minutes' drive away in Constable Country. The River Stour, Flatford Mill, and Dedham Vale feature in famous paintings by John Constable.
Drive 20 minutes south to explore Mersea Island. West Mersea Beach is lined with colourful beach huts. Try the Colchester native oysters—a delicacy that has been harvested here since Roman times.

If it had a slight fault, it would be the breakfast, not too much of a choice.

The Hotel is nicely situated in the middle of the High Street. I thought it would be noisy but it wasn't. We had a lovely stay and the staff were so friendly.

Nice friendly welcome. We requested an additional pillow and 5 minutes after we got to our room housekeeping arrived with it. The hotel was really clean and the was a mix of original building a new. Breakfast was cooked to order so was hot rather than warmish from buffet style.
Other Comments
The room we had was very spacious but was lacking chest of drawer so had to leave tops n bottoms in suit case. Could have done with a queen or king size bed but that’s persaonal preference.

Another 2 nights at The George, courtesy of a Travelzoo deal again. This hotel is right in the centre of the town, and the rooms are excellent, along with the breakfasts. This is our 3rd stay here, being only a few miles from the home of our great grandadughter.

Staff all very friendly and helpful especially Paula on reception who remembered us from a visit to the Mill in Sudbury several years previously. Dinner was marvellous; quite the best fish and chips we’d had in years. But breakfast was a letdown. Dreadful coffee ,horrid sausages, and poorly cooked fried eggs. Also the higgledy piggledy nature of the corridors and stairs made it very difficult for those of us with ailments as there was no lift.

We were woken up past 1 am by the supposed hotel 'room service' manager who then mumbled about being at the wrong room! - I did not get back to sleep that night after that as that encounter was so strange. spoke to reception the next am, and they could not have been less bothered. Apparently it was not someone who worked at the hotel, but a guest. Due to being woken up, and then not being able to sleeping after, we were 15 mins late for breakfast, which they then declined to serve us. Really terrible customer service.

The room looked fine but the bathroom after having the door closed smelt really bad (drains)
Also the room at the front of the hotel was extremely noisy from outside Cars revving up and loud voices at 11-12 pm At 6am beer delivery in the street was very noisy for 15-20 minutes No secondary glazing as old hotel I presume Windows only opened a few inches so could not let smell out We had room 304

This was a Travelzoo choice and a birthday treat for a friend. The Castle is literally just around the corner so we combined rest, culture and shopping ( Fenwicks department store is just along from the hotel) .

Our room was good but a bit of a trek and unfortunately our view was entirely the wall and windows of the function room about a meter opposite! Luckily the noise from the wedding party ended at 11 pm!

The hotel is in the centre of Colchester and recently refurbished. It is a big hotel with plenty of seating areas and large bar.
The bedroom was well equipped and the bathroom was a good size. The bath was slippery and would have liked a mat.
We had a bed and breakfast booking.
The breakfast was ok but would have liked a bowl of mixed fruit salad. There was plenty of choice for a cooked breakfast.

Lovely hotel set in the heart of Colchester City. Lots of shops & restaurants on the doorstep, Hotel staff amazing, breakfast good, lots of cosy areas to relax, rooms spacious. A nice park & castle very close, plenty of walks by the river. We loved our two night stay & hope to return: parking available behind the hotel at £12 a day which we felt was a little expensive.

Evening meal 3 starters: was served gold so returned it. 2nd serving cold again except hot the pitta bread
Checked room was being cleaned and was told yes and it wasn’t. Cups were nit replaced in the room, beds not made, one glass not replaced
Breakfast: 2 fried eggs served were returned as awful, I requested vegetarian meal with vegetarian sausage - I was served something with peas, carrots etc in that was deep fried and awful. It was not a vegetarian sausage at all. Was very disappointing

Fantastic hotel with heaps of history and character. High quality meals, very efficient, friendly and professional staff. Feature bedrooms are superb! Just one negative. Perfectly positioned for easy walking access to local restaurants, bars and attractions. The hotel is on the High Street and noise levels from traffic and pedestrians can be very intrusive at times, with the bedroom windows open. Otherwise, a faultless experience.

Due to the age of the hotel, internal access can be limited for those with mobility issues.

as a senior citizen I missed the absence of any printed instructions e.g. how to use the fiercely digitalised room phone - I couldn't even contact reception. Same in bathroom - frustrating effort trying to work out the taps - over shower

My only criticism is it was a bit too cool to relax in the downstairs seating areas as the windows and doors were all open. It was only April.
