"Second visit and still finding new things to explore. Hotel very friendly, excellent breakfast and restaurant. A very special village, privilege to stay here."
Set into a cleft on North Devon's coastline, Clovelly is a historic landmark. Cobbled lanes, whitewashed cottages, and fishing boats lend it a "quaint, yesteryear feel" (BBC Travel).
A scenic path winds down from the top of the 400-foot cliff. Stroll along whitewashed cottages to the quay with views of the Atlantic.
The New Inn was built in the 17th century and is halfway down Clovelly's cobbled hill. It has 11 rooms, some of which have balconies.
The village served as a shooting location for "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society".

We stayed four nights. Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice and good service. The town and hotel have plenty of character. The position of the hotel, although idyllic along the cobbled hill, is tiring to access. Good walking shoes and fitness are required. We would not recommend this to disabled people but recommend it highly for fit walkers.

On arrival it would be nice to have a biscuit with a cup of tea. Had to ask 3 times for more toilet rolls. The chef was AWOL (their words) the first night and we waited ages for a second chef to be found, thankfully. They ran out of small cartons of milk, but a kind man in the kitchen gave me a jug of milk so that I could have a cup of tea in my room. Did not realise it was so steep in Clovelly and had to carry luggage a long way down. Even with the jeep, we still had to carry our luggage back down to it. Hope this is constructive.

On arrival we found the hotel covered in scaffolding and whilst we appreciate work has to be done feel we should have been notified prior to
Arriving.
Bathroom not as luxurious as described, poor shower with water barely coming out.

6 of us met up at The New Inn, Clovelly as it was geographically situated between us.
We felt the deal was excellent value for money; particularly as our Room (no. 7 ) had a comfortable bed. It was a bit disappointing to see a carpet stain looking suspiciously like where a dog had peed in the corner but apart from that everything else was clean and homely.
It is such an atmospheric location and ideally situated just half way down the very, very, very steep hill. We are all in our late 50s/early 60s and thought we were relatively walking fit, but this terrain really does test you, with it being rounded pebbles too. And when they say 'travel light'; it's really imperative that you do.
We would wholeheartedly recommend the hotel to anyone who'd like to explore this beautiful bit of coastline......the only reason we wouldn't return is because of the challenging inclines!
Other Comments
Although the breakfast was perfectly cooked, we did feel that calling them 'Farmhouse' sausages was a stretch too far!
Understandably it must be a challenge to get provisions in, but a lovely bit of bacon and local sausage would have been more ideal.

This is the third time we have stayed at The New Inn and we were disappointed with our room this time round. We were on the opposite side of the road to the main pub which is where the staff live, and the room we had was very tired. The carpets were very stained and marked, the curtains didn't close and the bathroom blind also didn't work! The breakfast was great, however the choice of food in the restaurant was far more limited than previous years and much more expensive, hence we ate at the other restaurant in Clovelly the second night as it was much better quality and cheaper!!!!

Very pleasant stay and Clovelly is a fascinating village. Staff were friendly with good service in the bar and restaurant. Only marked as neutral for the room and ambience because its an old building so if you consider its age I suppose it could be 'good'.
Other Comments
The walk to and from the car park does make you puff! The New Inn is nearer the top so its a nice walk down to the harbour but the return does take your breath away. Just take your time and its doable and the reward is waiting for you in the bar!

Amazing location. The hotel is 18th century with period features. Our room was en-suite, with tea/coffee making facilities, smart tv and good Wi-Fi. Breakfast was great - full English plus other options. Dietary restrictions could be catered for at breakfast and in the bar/restaurant. Although it was low season there were a few shops and a cafe open during the day. We saw porpoises just off the harbour!
Other Comments
It’s a steep walk up/down to the hotel with no vehicular access, so travel very light and wear a pair of good non-slip shoes. Not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

The majority or hotel staff and locals made us feel very welcome and made up for parts of the hotel which were a bit shabby. Some money needs spending there but the cosy relaxed atmosphere made up for it. Food very good overall. Room clean and tidy.
Other Comments
The breakfast room felt grubby and tables sticky but food good. The additional cream tea was for one but we had to share which was bit unfair as the teapot was tiny and we had small cup each! Overall we had a good experience at the Inn and village of Clovelly. The locals are lovely.

It was a magical experience in such an atmospheric place. The staff (especially Purdy) were so helpful and it was easy and so relaxed. I could not fault it all for value, location and the friendliness of all the locals we encountered. So much to do without getting into the car. We are hoping to return very soon.

We booked for a 2 night break with son and daughter in law and 2 dogs. Could not have been a nicer break. The building is historic so there were minor drawbacks like small bedrooms - but that did not matter! Staff were fabulous and could not do enough. Food was sensational - breakfasts were best I have had in a hotel - if it wasn't on the menu, they would try and do it for you. Dinner was equally great with a good selection cooked to perfection. Idyllic spot, only drawback the wear and tear on the knees going up and down the cobbles! Wonderful hotel and break - will definitely be back.

Hotel and breakfast was great. We really struggled with our bags so use of a hotel sledge would have been very useful. Would not have stayed longer as food choice in both hotels was quite limited and we didn't get travelzoo discount on food but had s lovely break and have recommended to family already.

Lovely young lady called Purdy seemed to be everywhere at once and did a grand job. Don’t take too much luggage because you can’t drive to the hotel. Very steep drop down but beautiful and a much slower pace of life as a steepness of the paths means you have to walk slowly!

john and wife are great attributes to the Inn and made our stay. Evening meals are expensive all circa #19 when we visited. However, most are more than enough to fill you and the Fish and Chips are particularly large.

When we arrived there was no staff to check in and instructions to fill out all your paperwork and keys left on a desk to go find your room ??? Building is tired and needs desperate renovation. Avoid plastic cheap sausages for breakfast. A jumble sale of cutlery and crockery in breakfast room !

We were booked in my the bar manager - who was really the only member of staff we saw and complained all the time about how many hours he was working.

The cream tea - was in a polystyrene box in our room - a little disappointing - also difficult as the only place to eat it was on the bed.
The evening meals were basic pub food but not cheap and cheerful.

Early in March was a good time to go as it wasn’t too busy and the spring flowers were out, however, a number of the attractions such as the shop, tea rooms, fisherman’s cottage museum were closed. What made it special for us was that everyone had time to talk and be friendly, residents of Clovelly and visitors alike.

Our room wasn't in the main Hotel building but in a separate building across the cobbles. It was a cold, shabby miserable room with broken furniture and the thinnest duvet (we had to spread our coats on top of the bed at night). I went through the seat of the rattan chair not realising it was broken. The bathroom was also very cold and bare with the tiniest heated towel rail. Reception didn't seem concerned when I told them how disappointed I was with our room and the dodgy chair.
A local told me that the rooms in that building were usually only used for people passing through eg hikers.
I bought this voucher based on the pictures and reviews on the New Inn website most of which were favourable but I'm guessing we were given the room which had received the terrible reviews. We've had quite a few Travelzoo hotel breaks , all of which have been really good but this one fell well short of the mark. I'm sure the rooms in the main hotel were probably fine but we obviously drew the short straw. So for anyone booking at this hotel - AVOID ROOM 21 !!
Very very disappointed!!

We (like a lot of other people I imagine) were desperately in need of a break and this deal came up at exactly the right time. The very friendly staff welcomed us warmly and nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was spacious and spotless with a little balcony but sadly we couldn't sit on it as it was so cold (it was February!) We dined there both nights of our stay and the food was delicious. Had we been a bit younger and fitter, a walk down to the harbour would have been the icing on the cake but not possible for our 76+ year old arthritic knees so we just slowly strolled uphill and visited the Clovelly walled gardens and church (both beautiful) and back for our delightful cream tea. A much needed and welcome break, made even better by the glorious views, sunshine and John and Corals care of us.
Just remind people to only take a lightweight amount of luggage
