More Reasons to Go
- 1861 Restaurant with Rooms is in a converted Victorian building in rural Monmouthshire. It is run by the husband-and-wife team of Simon and Kate King. The AA awarded it five stars and two Rosettes.
- There are six guestrooms at the property. They are individually decorated and named after flowers. Guests can help themselves to tea, coffee, and refreshments in the common lounge area.
- Chef Simon creates daily menus based on seasonal produce foraged by the family. The restaurant also sources from local farms and Kate's father's nursery.
- The award-winning White Castle Vineyard and Apple County Cider Co. are within 10 minutes' drive from the restaurant. They produce top-notch Welsh wines, cider, and perry that are on the menu at 1861.
- Abergavenny is on the edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). It is known for its annual food festival. The Victorian market hall hosts weekly markets and the high street is lined with independent cafes and shops.

Accommodation was super quality and event was spotless. Food was fabulous, and we ate there 2 nights running… Hotel is very secluded, so perfect if you want a nice quiet few nights away… Would highly recommend, food was Michelin Star quality.

We arrived for a short break to find a gem of a place in a stunning location. . We were warmly welcomed by Simon the Chef/co owner and we were shown to our cosy, comfortable bedroom. There was no lack of attention to detail from the soft towels and ‘delicious smelling’ toiletries to the sweet detail of having lavender bags in each drawer! Every detail of comfort was provided.
We enjoyed absolutely stunningly presented and delicious food in Kate and Simon’s restaurant which had a really cosy cottage ambiance too.
The next morning we were able to have our continental breakfast which we were able to help ourselves to. This included a variety of fresh fruits, cereals, meats, cheeses and also home cooked freshly baked bread and croissants served with home made jam and marmalade. Also a variety of teas and coffee. What more could one ask for!!! Thank you Kate and Simon.

Lovely couple running this hotel, with an open kitchen and a lovely lounge for relaxing. Amazing, quality main meals. Only disappointment was that it was not in an area where you could walk out and wander around a village or something. Quite isolated

Delicious food, fresh ingredients with homemade extras and great to have a drink without worrying about driving. The service was exceptional and the dining room very comfortable. A beautiful part of Wales, ideal for walking and exploring. Breakfast included homemade bread, croissants, and preserves as well as a selection of meats, cheeses and fruits and cereals. All beautifully presented which we could serve ourselves in a relaxed but perfect kitchen.
