This famous former smugglers' inn dates back to 1420; it was reputedly visited by Elizabeth I and has hosted the Queen Mother.
Our members love this property, praising the "fabulous" location, "lovely" staff, and "delicious" food.
There's a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant that serves "memorable dishes", according to The AA, as well as a bar and several lounges.
Camber Sands, a 3-mile-long sandy beach, is a 10-minute drive away. It's one of the UK's best spots for beachcombing (Daily Express) and is a popular location for kitesurfing, too.
Camber Castle, a 16th-century fort built by Henry VIII, is five minutes' away. It's set within Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, where you might spot tern and oystercatchers.
Ypres Tower, which was built in the 13th century and has impressive views of the River Rother, is less than five minutes' walk from the hotel. It's one of the sites of the Rye Castle Museum—the other is a former bottle factory on East Street—and houses exhibits telling the town's story.

This was my fifth stay at the Mermaid, three times solo and twice with my wife. As always the staff were fabulous, always chatty and cheerful as well as very efficient and helpful. The 600 year old building has bags of atmosphere, a fabulous bar with huge open fireplace plus two other lounges, and is in the heart of the town. It has its own car park including 4 electric charging points. The food is excellent, especially breakfast. I'll be back again in a few months - looking forward to it already.

From start (check in) to finish (check out) and beyond (I left an important notebook in my room which the Receptionist very helpfully agreed to send me).
ALL staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The Hotel itself is beautiful and quaint and historical and full of atmosphere!! Our room was gorgeous! I can honestly say it is one of the best Hotels I have stayed in for ambience and fabulous staff which goes a long way into making a memorable stay.
I will definitely return soon and take friends to soak up the atmosphere!!

If you have mobility issues this may not be for you as there are lots of uneven stairs and floors but this is what you would expect in such an historic hotel with creaky floorboards stories of ghosts it’s just a wonderful place to stay….

Wonderful historic hotel. Everything that appeals to my love of the antique. Staff wonderful in every department. Night porter offered and served tea in the early hours when I was downstairs reading in the early hours. A lovely. A much appreciated unsolicited touch indicative of the ethos of the family run, non chain hotel.
Food in the restaurant was special and made our occasion memorable.

As a timber framed hotel dating back to the 14th century Any one visiting should expected the creaks and groans of the old building all part of its wonderful character. The bathroom in our room was however a bit dated and the shower curtain needs to be cleaned.

This historic hotel in the centre of Rye is perfect for exploring the old town.
Our tudor period room was beautiful. Unfortunately the bathroom was inadequate for bathing and showering. Also our room got overly hot in Augusts heatwave .
All the staff were uniformed, and helpful, the food of a high standard .

Most of the receptionist were lovely there was one who was curt and straight talking lacked training. So did many of the waiting staff and none of them smiled not once. They seemed unhappy at work and one bar man was very rude and stressed at the staff, after driving for 3 hours we went straight to the bar and was witnessing this very stressed barman, we sat outside so we could relax .Mentioned this to the receptionist who just smiled awkwardly and said nothing.
The housekeeping staff looked happy and relaxed and the room was immaculate.
There was one receptionist Elizabeth who was particularly helpful throughout our 3 days. The breakfast was delicious and high quality food.
We didn't eat at the restaurant too pricey and the same menu each evening and not a very extensive choice.
We did enjoy our stay but I don't think I would choose to stay there again.

We loved staying at this famous inn. It is quite basic for the price but I guess we were paying for its history which is amazing. The staff were really helpful and communicative and went out of their way to ensure that we had a parking space for our two night stay. Breakfast was very good.
