The Rising Sun and its adjoining cottages are Grade II-listed. Inside, it's "wonderfully rickety and rambling, with a fire-lit bar, cask ales, good food, and genial locals" (The Daily Telegraph).
Romantic poet Percy Shelley honeymooned in the pub's cottage in 1812.
The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is less than a minutes' walk from the inn's front door. It's unique for being the world's highest and steepest, water-powered, funicular railway. Hop aboard to climb to the cliff-top village of Lynton.
The South West Coast Path passes through Lynmouth. To the west is the Valley of Rocks and a 40-minute hike. Countryfile named this dramatic coastal expanse one of the best places in the UK to take a spring walk.

A very nice welcome. It is situated in the most beautiful area & setting. The room was very small & quirky, but it was perfectly adequate, cosy, with a very comfortable bed & clean facilities. It came with a sea view, but I'm not sure that an extra £20 a night was worth it!
I would, however, still recommend the Rising Sun to friends and family. Get the parking permit as there are plenty of parking areas, but none that are long term immediately close to the hotel which is in an elevated position. Good mobility is required.
Having said that we enjoyed our stay very much. With the Travelzoo discount it was very good value for money indeed.

We didn't choose to have the evening meals there during our stay. If you are into a predominantly sea food menu then go for it. I don't necessarily agree to the claim that it caters for all tastes and offered broad choices of food. The menu tried hard to sound upmarket, but the descriptions were far too fancy & fussy to encourage us to eat there in the evening. This a personal observation, of course!
There were very good breakfast choices and they were well cooked and presented.
Polite and well mannered staff, but their attire could be more of a consistent uniform rather than just very casual clothing that didn't appear to be very clean on occasions!

Fantastic couple of days, excellent staff and food, atmosphere was great. Our room was great, only downfall was so many steps and narrow stairs to get to it, however the staff took our cases up and fetched them down for us, Would certainly go there again, asking for a room on lower level

A beautiful old inn with quirky corridors to get to our comfortable room in which everything worked. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was superb and freshly cooked for us. There were interesting nearby locations like the Valley of the Rocks, Lynton and the brilliant cliff funicular and there are good coastal walks, just right for a three night stay.

Perfectly kept Badger draught beers at The Rising Sun were a bonus! We also enjoyed a short boat trip from Ilfracombe to view the solar eclipse.

Also there are so many flies in the dining areas for breakfast and dinner, it’s disgusting that they land on the food and swarm around you when eating.

The Rising Sun is in an excellent position right on the harbour front, with lovely views. We spent a happy couple of days there and were lucky to have wonderful weather. Our bedroom was small but had sea views, offered everything we needed and was clean. The restaurant was small and perhaps a little down at heel looking, but the food was very good.

The Rising Sun is a 14th Century thatched inn, it has lots of ups and downs with stairs etc and is very quirky. This is all ok, and I said I would recommend it. However, we were very put off by the Reception area and staff when we arrived. I would use the words over casual and 'tatty'! I do appreciate the building is challenging, but would say it really could do with some TLC and rather more thought about first impressions when people arrive. However, once we settled into the hotel the rest of the experience was modest, but perfectly acceptable. Thank you.

Fab-u-lous! A charming hotel, fun yet attentive staff team. Lovely comfortable rooms. Delicious dinners & breakfasts. If one has a room accessed from the exterior slope instead of the internal staircase, be advised to take flat footware, but the walk upto your accommodation will be well worth the views.

Great hotel with lovely comfortable rooms and atmosphere. We were a little disappointed with dinner. The waitress was brilliant however, realised and returned the dish. Breakfast on our second day was very slow as there were a lot of guests and one over worked server. Normally we would not have worried but today we were in a hurry. Generally a great , historical and comfortable place to stay.

We were initially given a room with a bath and handheld shower over, but preferred a proper shower cubicle. The hotel was happy to accommodate our request and able to give us a different room. All management and staff were very helpful and friendly. Great location by the harbour.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
I was a bit disappointed in the room on first entering, but it's charm grew on me. Our sea view room was small, but comfortable (thedouble bed was a bit short for my husband). Also, there was a rolltop,clawfoot bath (personally, I would prefer a shower - but that is a minor point ,really - unless mobility is an issue). Bedding and towels were good quality. The sloping floor showed the antiquity of the building- a real sense of history throughout the hotel.
The sea view room has a window seat to soak up the delightful setting - and watch the sun rise, if you want to get up early enough (I almost did!)

We didn't have an evening meal at the hotel, but enjoyed a glass of wine in the bar and noticed a great range of beers. Breakfast was lovely - especially the homemade granola.

WOW !!!! Wonderful stay in every way. Staff are so welcoming and cant do enough for you. Room has been more than we could of imagined. Food also first class. Breakfast filled us up for the day and the supper menu is top notch.
