More Reasons to Go
- Get transported back to Elizabethan London and explore the 400-year history of Bankside as a theatre district.
- Hear the story of the first frost fair in winter of 1607. See the site of the Castle Upon Hope pub where Shakespeare, Marlow, and their contemporaries reputedly sipped on Bankside's hop-made ale.
- Visit the sites marking the remaining archaeology of the 1599 Globe Theatre, the Hope Theatre, and the bear enclosures for Bankside's many bear baiting arenas.
- Learn about the archaeology of London's first playhouse, The Rose. Reputedly, this is where Shakespeare's earliest plays were performed.

Very interesting and a good small group. The guide (Michael?) was rather full of himself but was also informative about the history of the theatre itself. A visit to the exhibition was curtailed because it was being closed early for ‘an event’. This was particularly disappointing because I waited until it had reopened following a reorganisation.

Lucky for us they were rehearsing Romeo and Juliet so we had an added extra to our tour.

The experience was well organised and easy to book. We booked for 2.30 pm but arrived with loads of time to spare. The staff were really helpful and switched us to an earlier tour. The guide was informative and interesting. The sets were up for a modern version of Romeo and Juliet which made it more spectacular. The indoor candlelit theatre was in use so we couldn't officially see inside it but we were lucky enough to visit during the interval. It was amazing to see it all lit up with hundreds of candles.

Our guide ( a very theatrical young man), brought the whole experience to life with fantastic knowledge about the Globe itself, Shakespeare and the theatre scene throughout the ages.

Booking the guided tour with the Travelzoo voucher I bought was not easy or straightforward. I emailed the address Travelzoo recommended and though a member of staff replied and was helpful, I had to submit additional information. Even so, I still had not had the tour confirmed the night before. of the tour and had to email again asking for confirmation of my booking. I still had not received a reply the following morning and In the end, went to the Globe early to sort it out and was booked for a different time slot.

Went with our 10 year old granddaughter. The talk was brilliant - full of interesting facts and info about Shakespeare’s time, the area and the theatre. Presentation was excellent and my granddaughter remembered all the details! The exhibition was really fun and engaging too. Lots to see and think about.
