We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Aldwark Manor and the Murder Mystery event. It's a beautiful hotel. There were a few minor issues. We couldn't check into our room until dead on 3pm. This took several minutes to complete which meant we were delayed in going to the spa for the 2 hour slot we had booked.
The room was beautiful, but there was no fridge and we were not provided with any bottled water. There was a very small travel hairdryer and I'm glad I took my own. Robes were provided to wear to the Spa, but no slippers.
On a more positive note the evening meal and breakfast were very good.

The food was very good, service was excellent on the whole, hotel had good standard of furnishings, room was a good size, Agatha bus was a nice touch
Other Comments
The bed was very uncomfortable, far too hard, barely slept. Attended murder mystery, have been to many and found the acting wasn't very good or engaging. Had a drink served in cracked glass and the bartender wasn't very apologetic

The hotel and it's setting are fabulous. Unfortunately the service was really poor and not because the staff were unhelpful or rude but because they clearly lacked training and support from management. In addition there was insufficient staff to serve customers in the bar and after the murder mystery event ended it took quite some time for staff to actually get to the bar to serve guests. Earlier in the day a very personable young man attended the bar to offer service but he was clearly not trained to do so. He did not know what glasses to use, which drinks were which and when asked for a liquor coffee he said he'd google how to make a liquor coffee because he didn't actually know what one was! A hotel of this grandeur where it's clear a significant amount of money has been spent on it's refurbishment deserves staff that are trained and managed effectively to ensure they can provide the highest standards of service and thjat attention to detail was so clearly missing. In terms of the actual event this again required managing more effectively. The initial 'drink on Agatha' was not co-ordinated in any way and the member of staff who was serving drinks on the bus actually left to ask someone?? if she could serve prosecco. This left event clients just hanging around. Again I don't believe this was the fault of the member of staff she clearly was not given a clear brief or support. The food served at dinner was mixed, starters were good, the dessert was very good but the main course was very average whilst the vegetarian main course was inedible. The murder mystery event was enjoyable but the 'murder team' disappeared several times during the evening which impacted on the continuity. Finally a brief comment on the two members of staff from Travelzoo who introduced themselves and then promptly disappeared. No doubt the price of the event reflected the cost of their presence but there was no benefit to Travelzoo members to them being in attendance

My comments about whether I would return or recommend this venue are entirely based on the poor service provided. What should have been a showcase event for the Aldwark Manor Estate was spoiled by the fact that the standard of service provided fell far short of what I, other members of my party and other guests I spoke to expected from this establishment. The management of Aldwark Manor have a lot to learn.

We loved the extra touches real milk in the room and the biscuits . Would have been nice if we could have tried the outdoor pool without having to pay extra for it .

This was our first booking with Travelzoo and probably worth the price of the membership just for this one trip. The Hotel and grounds were top class, we particularly enjoyed spending time in the spa which was very relaxing. Breakfast was superb both mornings and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Would absolutely go again.
