Why We Love This Deal
The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel offers a dog-friendly escape on the River Taw. Join the Tarka Trail or jump aboard the Tarka Line for a scenic rail journey. It's £99 for an overnight stay, with breakfast and afternoon tea*

"We had a lovely time and will definitely look forward to going again. Staff very helpful and friendly, food and room was lovely. Highly recommend especially if you have a dog."
The hotel is a 30-minute drive from the boundary of Dartmoor National Park. Its sweeping moors and craggy tors painted the backdrop for scenes in Steven Spielberg's "War Horse".
The Fox and Hounds welcomes dogs in all areas, including guest rooms and the restaurant. The six acres of grounds has designated off-leash areas.
The property is on the Tarka Trail and sits on the River Taw. Amidst Forestry Commission land, you're surrounded by miles of off-road wooded walks to enjoy. Here are some nearby dog-friendly walks.
Hop aboard the scenic Tarka Line railway, which runs from Exeter to Barnstaple. Take in picturesque views through the Yeo and Taw Valleys. Access the route at Eggesford station, which is five minutes' walk from the hotel.
Sample British and international dishes at the casual Heywood Restaurant. It's open daily from 8am–11pm for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The 65-acre RHS Rosemoor is a 25-minute drive from the hotel. It contains formal and informal gardens, and has plenty of woodland walking paths to explore.
*Afternoon tea is served Monday–Saturday 12–3:30pm; reserve upon booking. Guests staying overnight on Sunday get a bottle of prosecco instead of afternoon tea.

If you are booking this for the fishing , please check with the hotel prior to booking that fishing is permitted. We arrived during the hot weather and fishing in Devon was banned due to low waters.

The Fox and Hounds is located in rural central Devon making travel to the north and south coasts easily doable by car. There is a train station nearby too (Eggesford). The food at the hotel was of a high standard and delicious. Our room was very clean, if a little tired.
The main feature of this hotel though is its dog- friendliness! Dogs (under control) are allowed in all areas and there is an off-lead dog walking area by the river. If a dog is nervous, or vocal, around other dogs, the staff will take action to ensure the dog is looked after (eg screening off the dog to avoid eye contact with other dogs) and to ensure the comfort of other residents. If you want a dog-friendly break, I recommend the Fox & Hounds. If you don’t like dogs…perhaps it’s not for you :-).

We understood it was a dog friendly hotel but not expecting it to be taken over by dogs. We have no problem with dogs around the hotel but do not agree with them being allowed in the restaurant. People want to eat in peace and not hear barking dogs which was our experience. We felt that we were not accepted as much as those people with dogs and therefore would not go back.

Evening dinner menu was superb. Food was cooked to perfection.

Hotel dated, especially the rooms. No real lounge area for guests.
Afternoon tea was extremely basic. Too loaded with sweet items and very few sandwiches!

We’ve just got back from a 3 night break at the Fox and Hounds, as always all the staff were very welcoming, pleasant and nothing appeared to be too much trouble.
Our only problem was that our stay coincided with the hottest June temperatures on record!! 16C above monthly average! Consequently our room was somewhat hot! (Not the hotel’s fault I must stress!). The hotel has wonderful, well kept grounds.
I can’t fault this dog-friendly hotel, I would thoroughly recommend it!

Friendly staff. Lovely gardens. Excellent evening menu.
A lot of dogs (a bit ‘dog smelly’ in places). Poor breakfast. No space in bathroom to put things. Thin walls (could hear guest in next room coughing all night, talking, going to loo…). No hot water one morning, tree felling in woods during night one night (railway work apparently, woke everyone up)

The welcome was very genuine from all members of staff we encountered - the property itself looked very good in terms of promotional material and indeed was equal, in fact better than we anticipated. The place is spotless and the food excellent. As a very dog friendly establishment our cocker spaniel had a very enjoyable time too.

Beautiful place in lovely location, staff helpful, breakfast great , evening meal not good. The hotel produced a version of fine dine without the ability to execute. As chefs we could see the concept but feel it would do better aiming for hearty , country inn style cooking ,done well. The building was empty on a Saturday which is a shame as it was easy to see how it could feel if full and vibrant. We would definately stay again as a base but would always look for other restaurants in the area.

Lovely gardens and can see how it would be a good wedding/ garden party venue.

Staff and service couldn’t fault, although the menu is pretty limited - dog friendly environment with substantial grounds to walk your dog - only downside is the rooms, well used and could do with a facelift but, I would visit again with the dog.

Rooms are well used squeaking floorboards along corridor to rooms which if you have a dog which is alert to every sound could be a problem

Hotel in a beautiful location. Although there is a beautiful section of river in which to walk the dog, you had to get in the car to access longer walks which was a shame. highlights were the friendly helpful staff and dinner was really delicious, highly recommend. We felt the rooms were basic and tired but comfortable. We, and the dog, enjoyed our stay with special shout out to staff and the chef!

It was a good deal but a cosy room meant you could not open the bedroom door without knocking the bed. Staff were very helpful but Hotel is in need of refurbishment.
Not much choice at breakfast for GF except cooked breakfast, no fruit or GF cereal or bread.

Mum and I really enjoyed our stay here, the staff are so kind and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks again boys for all your help.
Our dinner the first night was delicious, loved the wood burner for a relaxing drink by.
Breakfast was fine and we enjoyed the afternoon tea.
Our room- we paid an upgrade of £20 per night faced the garden and was very comfortable. Beautifully decorated and very quiet.
The river walk was very relaxing, probably not long enough for us but there's plenty of walks a short drive away.

The location was brilliant if a bit challenging to get to. The food at the hotel is top notch, but selection is limited. It is very close to the train station for access to Exeter. We didn't know and that would have been good to know. Overall, the only negative points about the stay was the beds - the mattresses and pillows are in dire need of replacement. Overall 6.5/10 - replacing the mattresses and pillows would make it an 8/10 and just a few more food options would be great and make it 8.5/10.

We were blown away by the excellent quality and quantity of the afternoon tea; which came with our TravelZoo deal.
Our room was fabulous complete with a 4 poster double bed, but our relatives who were in the 'Cosy' rooms did find them to be just that!!
We would certainly intend to return in future....

We had a wonderful time with our dog. Stayed 2 nights in a small bedroom, which was charming, and had a big en-suite bathroom, where we could put up our dog’s soft cage. Very relaxing time with lovely walks nearby. Saw dippers by the river Taw at the back of the hotel. Great atmosphere and good food (breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner) and a good choice of drinks from the bar.

The staff were, in the main, excellent. Big shout out to Tegan, she was so personable and helpful. Not so much so the bar-staff.
Not sure the cost upgrade to 'superior' was actually value for money.
The hotel location/grounds were wonderful - the autumn leaf-change was in full effect and was stunning, who needs New England when old England does it so well!

Great if you have a dog/dogs as they are very welcome there with towels to dry them, doggy treats, a bowl with a treat in in your room and welcomed everywhere. Good outdoor space for them too. Tea and coffee in the room plus biscuits.
The cream tea was a nice scone and a cup of tea/coffee. Breakfast was good and contrary to other reviews was hot. The staff were all very friendly.
Had a problem with the TV in the room it buffered even with the basic BBC and ITV channels, couldn’t pick up any free view channels. Only watching it as it was pouring with rain and had been all day.
Evening meal was had there and that was good though a tad pricey. A car trip to get anywhere
No substitutions. Seasonal items subject to change.
