The Ro is one of the Lake District's oldest hotels. Dating from 1881, it originally opened as a hydropathic retreat where guests could indulge in water cures.
Guestrooms are "light and fuss-free" (The Daily Telegraph). Amenities include a coffee maker, bathrobes, and slippers.

Very warm and friendly welcome at Th Ro. Large, imposing hotel but looking its age in places (144 years old) despite a refurbishment 4 years ago. Clean but looked tired and in need of repainting and repair.
Staff were friendly throughout.
Meal on the first night was tasty. Breakfast, on the first morning was self service and good selection. The second morning only the cold self service was available but hot breakfast could be ordered.
Spa had a small rectangular swimming pool and jacuzzi. Nice relaxation room with water and fruit available but not much of a view. Lovely 30 minute facial. Overall we enjoyed the break.

Excellent value for what we got . Hotel in great location but could do with a little bit of TLC . Food and staff were excellent as well , only criticism is drinks were very expensive and staff forgot to clean our room on our first morning . Hotel is in a great location with stunning view of lake Windermere .the spa was beautiful and had excellent treatment .would definitely return agsin . Xxx

We had a good 2 night stay. We enjoyed the hotel. We had a lovely facial each, included in our Travelzoo booking. Food was really good, we ate breakfast and evening meals. Our room was large and the bed was very comfortable. Location great, 5 min walk into town but a steep hill if you have walking difficulties.

Excellent location - up a steep hill from the town but not too difficult a walk if reasonably fit. Every member of staff we met were wonderful and committed to ensuring we had a good experience. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food was excellent. There are only two things that could be improved for the perfect experience.
1. Every time we tried to contact by phone we got through to the answerphone which is frustrating if you need an urgent response. We heard other guests complain about this too. However, if contacting by email we always received a swift response.
2. Although we had no complaints about our room in terms of cleanliness we did feel there were some areas of the hotel that could have done with a better clean.

The bathroom in Room 110 is overlooked by a balcony. Persons on the balcony can see into the bathroom, which has a plain glass window without a blind. I reported this problem to the hotel.

The hotel's location is perfect, the rooms were stunning with the most beautiful views of the lake. The deal was extremely good value for money, including 2 nights with breakfast on both days, evening meal on the 1st night and lunch on the 2nd day included. The staff were all lovely and food was lovely. I would definitely return if another deal came up and I would recommend it very highly.

The Ro (formerly the Hydro) is a refurbished older building and, as a consequence, we felt sound insulation could be improved. Also, being on a hillside, there are good views of Windermere, however, some guests might find the walk into Bowness and back a little challenging.

Great views from lakeside 2nd floor .. lovely spacious room and bath/shower room .. nice bedding .. comfy bed so great night's sleep .. food in hotel at breakfast and dinner were excellent .. we didn't have lunch as we were out all day. We liked that the rooms weren't cleaned in our short stay. All the towels and robes and toiletries were lovely.

I think it would have been good to offer a daytime slot using the leisure facilities as an option to lunch as we would probably have bought lunch here anyway if it had been less sunny.

The staff were amazing. Only 2 guys running both the restaurant and bar and still delivered great service. Great location and we were lucky enough to get parked at the hotel although they do charge guests to park, however, if the car park is full there is no public car parks near.

The food was well cooked but I would describe it as pub food rather than restaurant quality.

Lovely hotel, food was lovely, it would have been perfect if we hadn’t been charged £15 to park our car on their own car park for 2 nights, totally unnecessary annoying charge, it would have been better charging a little more for the room to cover the car parking cost.
And the annoying habit they have of putting a 10% surcharge on every drink you order, it’s bad enough paying £40 for a bottle of Wine without being charged £44 in total for it!

The staff were very pleasant and helpful, it took a while to check out due to the staff not being very efficient on Reception, and having to go to the bar to get our bar bill when they knew we were leaving that morning, it would have saved a lot of time instead of them having to go to the bar for everyone’s bill and leaving the cues in reception.

A great position in Bowness, and a lovely room with views of the Lake.
I feel that it has been recently renovated, very comfortable room and bed, but the restaurant area lacks atmosphere, modern tables (no tablecloths) lighting is too bright and if you want a glass of wine there is no choice, just one white/ red or rose.
We are on a two night stay, the bottle of water has not been replaced from yesterday and when I asked for bread last night, it arrived after I had finished my starter.
Probably need more staff to.

Great location in the centre of Bowness. Refurbished about 4 years ago. Food was excellent. Staff very polite and good customer service from all. We had really good sunshine weather for our two day stay, and sat in the bar watching the sun go down on our last night which was lovely. They are able to slide back the sliding window doors to allow everyone to sit in the warm evening sun.
We stayed on the 18th and 19th March and have been very lucky with the weather.

Very comfortable room with a great outlook over lake Windermere. The great staff were very attentive and friendly making this a wonderful stay. The food was good with excellent range of food for breakfast. We both felt that we were really spoilt on this short break.
