Bristol Dockyards is home to SS Great Britain, the world's first modern ocean liner. Designed by legendary marine engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the ship was the blueprint for all ocean liners.     • The Dockyards are also open on Mondays during bank holidays and Bristol school holidays

  • SS Great Britain launched in 1843, and was the largest ship in the world. Brunel combined an iron hull with a screw propeller, making the ship the first of its kind. It was first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The ship currently sits on a "glass sea". Walk into the dry dock and see the ship's iron hull from below. You can also get up close to the giant propeller and the original iron plates.
