"A more impressive Georgian country pile is hard to imagine," says The Times of Swinton Park Hotel. This Grade II-listed castle hotel offers characterful country house accommodation in "a gorgeous location" (The Good Spa Guide).

Set in 200 acres of parkland on one of the largest private estates in England, bordering the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this Baronial hotel occupies an ivy-clad 18th-century castle "complete with battlements, a tower, and a turret" (Fodor’s). Owned by the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s, and the ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton, the hotel offers an authentic stately home experience.

Nearby attractions include tours of the Black Sheep Brewery, a 5-minute drive away, Thorp Perrow, with its historic arboretum, about 15 minutes' drive away, and "the picturesque ruins" (Lonely Planet) of Fountains Abbey, which take 25 minutes to reach by car. The National Rail Museum and Castle Howard -- "arguably the most spectacular stately home in England" (The Independent) -- are within 70 minutes' drive of the estate.

Swinton Park Hotel's interiors have an "opulent" (The AA) feel, with "acres of polished-wood floors and dark-red rugs, vast corridors hung with gilt-framed portraits and massive windows framed with pelmeted curtains" (The Daily Telegraph). Plush public areas include a cosy sitting room with a fireplace and a terrace, a lavish lounge where afternoon tea is served, and a bar in a converted chapel.

The hotel's "excellent" (Daily Mail) main restaurant has an "elaborate" (The Daily Telegraph) dining room and showcases local produce, including herbs, fruits and vegetables grown in Swinton Park's 4-acre kitchen garden. The Terrace Restaurant & Bar offers a "cool, contemporary" (The Daily Telegraph) dining option, serving light seasonal dishes that are "really something to shout about" (Daily Mail).

The spa holds a 5-bubble rating from The Good Spa Guide and its extensive facilities include an 18-metre indoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, an aroma steam room and a Finnish sauna, plus an eco-friendly 10-metre outdoor pool.

Guests can enjoy a range of country pursuits, including fishing, shooting and walking in the deer-filled grounds. Other activities on the estate include falconry, a cookery school and biking (arranged on request, fees apply).

Offering "sumptuous views of parkland, gardens or distant moors" (The Daily Telegraph), the hotel's rooms and suites are "individually designed, traditionally decorated and absolutely lovely", according to The Times. All include free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities, while individual features include canopy beds, sitting rooms, roll-top baths and antique furnishings. One suite is spread over three floors within the castle turret, and there's also a self-catering cottage for up to six people.

Minor niggles that distracted from what should have been an exceptional experience. However, Having advised staff of our concerns we were surprised to receive a call from their Mr Martin Kenny offering us a return complimentary visit which we have accepted. Can not fault their customer service and am sure we will enjoy our return visit to this beautiful facility.

The staff were great. The main building and rooms were super. The Spa and pool were superb. The best breakfast we have had for a long, long time! The grounds and walk/s were fantastic.

Our bedroom. The corridor to it was hot and smelly of food. The room itself was small, stiflingly hot, with some of the food smell. The room was dark (painted) and with not much lighting. It was too near extractor fans from the kitchen. We also had issues with the shower cleanliness. Generally, the room was not as expected or shown on their web site. Our room Aysgarth Falls, is not shown or listed on their web site under "Knights" rooms - curious!
