Overview

The Crown Hotel is a "regal" (The Daily Telegraph) property in the spa town of Harrogate that boasts "traditional old-world charm" and an "excellent location".

It's less than 10 minutes' walk from the fashionable shops, bars and restaurants in the town centre, where you'll also find the renowned Bettys tea room, "famed for its elegant afternoon teas, delectable cakes and biscuits, tasty lunches and excellent service" (The Yorkshire Post).

The Grade II-listed Valley Gardens -- a 17-acre park with seasonal flower displays, a café, a children's playground, a small boating lake, tennis courts and a crazy golf course -- is a 5-minute stroll from the hotel. Opposite the main entrance, you'll also find the impressive Victorian Royal Pump Room, now a museum where you can learn about the history of Harrogate water.

York and Leeds are both around 45 minutes' drive from the hotel, while the historic market towns of Wetherby and Knaresborough are less than 25 minutes' drive away. Harrogate is also a gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with popular sites such as Bolton Abbey, Swinsty Reservoir and Skipton Castle all around 30 minutes' drive away. The National Trust site of Brimham Rocks -- a large collection of natural rock formations in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty -- is also around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Breakfast is served in the grand ballroom -- the oldest in Harrogate -- where you can admire the original stained-glass windows and oak-panelled walls. There is also a bar for snacks and drinks throughout the day, and a restaurant that serves "hearty, well-presented European food" (The Daily Telegraph) and afternoon tea.

Executive Rooms are more spacious than Standard Rooms and feature a king-size bed. Wi-Fi is free.

Food was very average. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast poor, breakfast team need to learn how to smile. Restaurant dinner was not not worth it. Eventhough it was included. Much better options nearby. Cream tea - two microwaved scones. Hotel was noisy both floors and other people's bathrooms. Plus noisy latenight guests.

Only lowered the room rating as our headboard was rather worn leather effect that was flaking and left black bits on the bedding and bed wasn’t the comfiest, other than that, room was lovely.

The easy access bathroom was functional but did not have the feel of the rest of the hotel. The shower was very disappointing.

Easy parking and helpful desk staff. Bottle of wine in room was a surprise. Room very clean and warm. Large bathroom with fluffy towels. Service at bar was good. Breakfast was plentiful though the choice of breads on offer was poor.

Evening meal was good value. Starters were lovely. However two of our party ordered the steak & ale pie which had very tough meat. They told the waiter who didn’t seem to know what to do next. No replacement meal was offered just a limp apology. However despite that the other two meals were good.

We get away quite often and not all staff seem very welcoming but all the staff at the crown where very welcoming, friendly, smiley and very helpful we loved it !
Other Comments
The crown is very central and not far from Leeds or York , we thought the exchanging of the housekeeping your room for drinks to save on water was a very good idea , more hotels should do this.
