The Crown Hotel in the spa town of Harrogate is a "regal" (The Daily Telegraph) property that boasts "traditional old-world charm" and an "excellent location".

It's less than 10 minutes' walk from the fashionable shops, bars and restaurants in the town centre, where you'll also find the renowned Bettys tea room, "famed for its elegant afternoon teas, delectable cakes and biscuits, tasty lunches and excellent service" (The Yorkshire Post).

The Grade II-listed Valley Gardens -- a 17-acre park with seasonal flower displays, a café, a children's playground, a small boating lake, tennis courts and a crazy golf course -- is a 5-minute stroll from the hotel. Opposite the main entrance, you'll also find the impressive Victorian Royal Pump Room, now a museum where you can learn about the history of Harrogate water.

York and Leeds are both around 45 minutes' drive from the hotel, while the historic market towns of Wetherby and Knaresborough are less than 25 minutes' drive away. Harrogate is also a gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with popular sites such as Bolton Abbey, Swinsty Reservoir and Skipton Castle all around 30 minutes' drive away. The National Trust site of Brimham Rocks -- a large collection of natural rock formations in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty -- is also around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Breakfast is served in the grand ballroom, where you can admire the original stained-glass windows and oak-panelled walls. There is also a bar for snacks and drinks throughout the day, and a restaurant that serves "hearty, well-presented European food" (The Daily Telegraph) and afternoon tea.

A pleasant visit. I had been a little concerned about dining from a set menu but I was extremely pleased with the choice. Well cooked and very helpful staff.

We paid extra to park at the hotel and were a little concerned about the size of the car park spaces. We managed but one less space and a little more room would have been better.

The staff were attentive and efficient and the ambience in the public rooms was impressive. The standard of the food was very good but a request to replace cream with vanilla ice cream from the dessert menu was met with the response that it would be charged with a £1.50 supplement!!

Room ,though clean was very tired and old.Bathroom very basic and of a standard I haven't seen for years. We requested an alternative room which was slightly better but again needed a complete refurbishment. On booking we requested a refurbished room after reading some negative reviews so we were disappointed that the request wasn't actioned.

Good value for money - the Travel Zoo deal that is. I wouldn't necessarily stay at the Crown if it wasn't for the Travel Zoo deal, which was excellent.

The reserved parking outside the main entrance but the bays were too narrow.
Other Comments
The cream tea was nothing like the tea listed on their menu or website and the cream was strange and gave my wife great problems afterwards, using the toilet facilities a lot.
