Why We Love This Hotel

  • This seaside retreat has an "old-fashioned boarding house charm" (The Daily Telegraph) and a variety of leisure facilities
  • The property is five minutes' stroll from Studland Bay's golden-sand beach and is within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Enid Blyton, Winston Churchill, Vivien Leigh, and Roald Dahl all stayed at the hotel

Overview

Knoll House has a "sensational" (The Daily Telegraph) setting on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. It is five minutes' walk from the National Trust's Studland Bay, which has a 4-mile-long beach with views of Old Harry Rocks. This protected stretch of coastline features rugged heathland, nature reserves, and crystal-clear waters for bathing and watersports.

The hotel was a regular retreat of children's author Enid Blyton. It is said she used Studland when envisaging Toytown for her Noddy books, and that Brownsea Island and Corfe Castle provided inspiration for her Famous Five series. The castle, which has over 1000 years of history to delve into, is less than 15 minutes' drive away, as is Swanage, which has a pier and a steam railway.

Fort Henry, a Grade II-listed bunker where Winston Churchill, President Eisenhower, and King George VI once watched troops rehearsing for D-Day, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Keep an eye out for the pillboxes and Dragon's Teeth anti-tank obstacles dotted about the area.

Another nearby attraction is Agglestone Rock — a 400-tonne sandstone block also known as the Devil's Anvil — which is a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk away. You can drive 35 minutes to see Durdle Door, or walk 35 minutes along the South West Coast Path towards Shell Bay, where a ferry runs across to Sandbanks peninsula every 20 minutes.

Leisure facilities at the hotel include a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools (the outdoor pool is open from April to September). Dogs can stay in some rooms (£15 per dog, per night; bedding is not provided), but they are not allowed in dining and leisure areas. Wi-Fi is free.

The fact that the hotel was closed, and we were unable to go, and you wasting my time sending silly emails, and not responding to two emails I sent you prior to the visit. No problem with Knoll House just Travelzoo, and not keeping up with events.

Due to the coronavirus we could not go and have not received a voucher as per their website promise. Can't believe you are even asking as of Monday of this week we are not allowed to leave home!!!!!!

Visit didn't take place because Hotel refused, on 20th March, to reschedule our booking due to Coronavirus (my wide works for the NHS). I therefore cancelled the booking on 20th March. On 21st March the Hotel closed due to the virus. I requested a reversal of my earlier cancellation, to allow a rescheduling, now that the hotel was forced to offer this, as a result of deciding to close . This request was refused. I am aware, via a conversation with a very helpful person from Travelzoo, that many of your hotels, offering non transferable, non refundable schemes DID agree to be flexible and allow these changes given the truly exceptional circumstances. It is a real shame that there are still some greedy hotels out there, who, until they had to, refused to show this flexibility.

we thoroughly enjoyed out time at Knoll House. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was relaxing and pleasant. The afternoon tea was lovely and struggled to finish it all, but obviously did as too nice not too!! Had a nice dip in the in-door pool and Jacuzzi chillaxing. Had a pleasant walk around the grounds. The room was lovely and my only criticism would be that the bed was too firm and we both woke up aching and the noise of the heating woke us a couple of times in the night. The toiletries in the bathroom were spa quality. Dinner was superb and extremely good value for money. Breakfast was good. All in all a very pleasant stay and extremely good value with the Travelzoo offer.

Will definitely be returning for a dinner or two and will pop in when walking at Studland for a coffee or afternoon tea in the future.

We had a great time at Knoll House - just what we needed with all the coronavirus going on. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the situation so near to the beach.

We were very impressed at how the hotel coped with the situation of keeping everyone safe from the virus. It was much appreciated by us. The staff worked very hard at making sure we had a good time. We would love to come back in easier times. We wish all of you well for the future and hope we can get through all this.
