Knoll House has a "sensational" (The Daily Telegraph) setting on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. It is five minutes' walk from the National Trust's Studland Bay, which has a 4-mile-long beach with views of Old Harry Rocks. This protected stretch of coastline features rugged heathland, nature reserves and crystal-clear waters for bathing and watersports.

The hotel was a regular retreat of children's author Enid Blyton. It is said she used Studland when envisaging Toytown for her Noddy books, and that Brownsea Island and Corfe Castle provided inspiration for her Famous Five series. The castle, which has over 1000 years of history to delve into, is less than 15 minutes' drive away, as is Swanage, which has a pier and a steam railway.

Fort Henry, a Grade II-listed bunker where Winston Churchill, President Eisenhower and King George VI once watched troops rehearsing for D-Day, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Keep an eye out for the pillboxes and Dragon's Teeth anti-tank obstacles dotted about the area.

Another nearby attraction is Agglestone Rock -- a 400-tonne sandstone block also known as the Devil's Anvil -- which is a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk away. You can drive 35 minutes to see Durdle Door, or walk 35 minutes along the South West Coast Path towards Shell Bay, where a ferry runs across to Sandbanks peninsula every 20 minutes.

Leisure facilities at the hotel include a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools (the outdoor pool is open from April to September). Dogs can stay in some rooms (£15 per dog, per night; bedding is not provided), but they are not allowed in dining and leisure areas. Wi-Fi is free.

We had a lovely stay with excellent food and service. The only disappointment was that the spa and swimming pool were closed on our first day.

Had a great time we took our dog and they had thought of everything to make it work. I used the pool which was a bit small but had it to myself so able to enjoy. Afternoon tea delicious evening meal and breakfast outstanding.

Very easy to get to the beautiful Studland beach. We went to near by pub for evening meal on second night as restaurant quite expensive and no bar meals available. The pub was good and only 5 minutes away. All staff very friendly nothing too much trouble

We thought the hotel was perfect for a short break - the staff were lovely , very helpful and friendly , the food was excellent and the warm cosy atmosphere with all the different rooms for relaxing in was perfect It was lovely that there was no corporate style decor and the individual touches and the history relating to Enid Blyton and the hotel was fascinatingly displayed - we will definitely return.
Other Comments

Delightful and very helpful staff even being given a full tea when we arrived 30 minute after tea had finished. Dinner very good and well served. The room was a suite of 3 rooms so really for a family but each room was small and lacking in character. The garden and grounds are very well looked after and we much enjoyed our night away. We were there to watch birds in the Poole Estuary and visited Arne(RSPH), Middlebere (NT), and Studland(NT). first two excellent sightings of Avocet and Spoonbillls. Hotel is excellent value.
