The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run hotel in the town of Windermere. The property dates back to 1865, and is built from Lakeland stone.

Windermere, "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet), is a 15-minute walk away -- Rough Guides recommends hiking up Orrest Head for panoramic views of the lake. National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit The Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The hotel's restaurant serves traditional British dishes, and was a Taste Cumbria Dining Experience of the Year finalist in the 2016 Cumbria Tourism Awards. The Observer's critic Jay Rayner is a fan of the "glorious" bone-on rib of beef and a "magnificent" cauliflower cheese, which are served at Sunday lunch. The bar stocks local ales, wine and over 15 varieties of gin. There is a roaring fire in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

This was brilliant value for money, taking into account the food was excellent and I would have paid quite a lot for that meal..I can also recommend the cocktails! The staff were fantastic and my only slight negative would be that the room was too hot - even with the window open (in January!) - we would definitely stay (and eat) here again though.

The staff were excellent. Very welcoming. During our meals, they never over did the chat but were always there when we needed another drink. Heard them giving advice on particular wines for different meals to other diners. They should be proud of their staff.

My issue was with the room. It was slightly dated. The noise coming through the sash windows was very loud from the cars driving past. We were in room 3 and the shower was tiny. I am fairly large set and could only just get through the doors into the shower. Couldn't use it properly. A shame it wasn't the next size up. Another chair would have been ideal as there was only 1 chair so one of us had to sit on the bed.
