Why We Love This Hotel

  • This cosy Victorian property is in the town of Windermere, 15 minutes' walk from the lake, and has been run by the same family for almost three decades
  • Bowness-on-Windermere is five minutes away by car; Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away
  • The ground-floor dining room offers dishes using seasonal local produce

The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run property in the town of Windermere. It dates back to 1865 and is built from Lakeland stone. The property has fresh, light décor throughout, while maintaing its original features, such as grand fireplaces and large sash windows.

Windermere, "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet), is a 15-minute walk away. We recommend the short hike up Orrest Head for superb views of the lake, the fells, Morecambe Bay and the Pennines. Bowness-on-Windermere is five minutes away by car, while Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away.

National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away in Grasmere. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit the Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The hotel's restaurant serves traditional British fare made with seasonal local produce. The bar stocks a range of ales, wine and more than 15 varieties of gin. There is a roaring fire in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

Delightful stay here with friendly staff and delicious food. Our room was large and warm. We would certainly return.

The only problem we had was that dogs were allowed into eating areas. There were three of them during our second breakfast. Like dogs but not around tables.

Overall very good with an excellent evening meal. There is one big "however". Dogs are welcome here which is normally perfectly fine. However, a couple had a small dog that sat on them (like a baby) at the dining table during dinner and breakfast being fed bits and pieces off their plates. This should never be allowed and would, I'm afraid, put us off visiting here again.

More lights in the bedroom would be appreciated.

The hotel could perhaps do with a makeover especially in the entrance hallway and the room we stayed in only had single glazing so was a little bit drafty. The staff were very friendly and efficient.

Not the warmest of welcomes and only limited parking. Food however was excellent evening meals and a good choice for breakfast. Rooms in a good location. Not overly luxurious but ok for the price. Very dog friendly and many in the restaurant bar area which isn’t for everyone. It isn’t that big enough to escape two big labs! Very good for dog lovers not so great if you aren’t!!
