Overview
A former haunt of the 19th-century Hungarian elite, the 5-star Corinthia Hotel Budapest was restored to its former glory in 2003 and boasts a magnificent marble-embellished lobby that’s "among the most impressive in the capital", says Lonely Planet. It has since made both Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards in 2012 and its Gold List in 2013.
The hotel’s historic Erzsébetváros quarter location is considered "one of the best bar-hopping 'hoods on the busy Pest side of the Danube", notes Lonely Planet, and is popular with locals and travellers alike. Don’t miss the buzzing 'ruin pubs' housed in former ghetto slums -- Szimpla Kert is one of the first. Other nearby attractions include the Hungarian State Opera House, St Stephen's Basilica and the House of Terror -- an imposing neo-Renaissance mansion that was transformed into a museum of the double (Nazi and Soviet) occupation.
In a city renowned for its spas, the hotel’s Royal Spa more than holds its own. The art deco complex features Niagara baths, tropical rain showers and a stunning 15-metre pool, with a double-height ceiling. Other hotel highlights include the Rickshaw Restaurant for Peking duck and South East Asian specialties, like Szechwan hot and sour soup. Bock Bistro is a less formal option, but is no less impressive, having been awarded the "Bib Gourmand" rating by the Michelin Guide in 2013.
Rooms are classy, with mahogany trimmings, complimentary low-speed Wi-Fi, plush bedspreads and marble bathrooms, and overlook either the lobby atrium or Hársfa Street. Upgrade to an executive room or suite for access to the lounge, where free snacks and evening cocktails are served. As Frommer's notes, "this is a place to be pampered".
