Why We Love This Hotel
- The Townhouse Chester underwent extensive refurbishment last year. The property has a grand Georgian facade, a cosy lounge, and an outdoor terrace.
- Take a leisurely walk or boat ride at the River Dee, two minutes' walk away. The Groves, a scenic riverside path, has a choice of cafes, pubs, and restaurants.
- Head into nearby Grosvenor Park to visit the Roman Amphitheatre and gardens. It is 10 minutes' walk away.
- The city walls are known for being some of the most ancient and complete in Britain. They offer an elevated position from which to admire the city. Access points are at Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate, and Bridgegate.
- Chester's boutiques and independent shops are less than five minutes' walk away. The Rows are half-timbered galleries dating from the Medieval era.

The Townhouse Chester was lovely and decorated fantastic for Christmas. My friend has COPD and I did not do any research in advance, so did not realise there was no lift. We were on the top floor with no lift. Difficult to say the least. The staff were amazing and the breakfast was superb and freshly made and hot unlike so many other hotels.

Lovely hotel with amazing staff. Great value for money and had an amazing time there but concerns about the number of steps to the top floor as this is an old building the stairs are steep …for anyone with mobility issues request a low floor but consider steps up to hotel.

The Townhouse is very close to the centre and surrounded by great bars and restaurants, take your pick! The comfortable hotel lounge, bar and breakfast rooms are furnished and finished to a high standard. The bedroom and bathroom had everything we needed and was extremely clean as was the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was
exceptional with a great choice available. The staff were so polite, helpful and very accommodating. We would certainly go back to this lovely hotel.

Excellent deal through Travelzoo for 2 nights inc breakfast and a bottle of Prosecco. Very good location, (but no parking) best car park is in Grosvenor shopping centre, the breakfast choice was very good, staff were very polite and efficient. The room we stayed in was no.5 which was ideal for our 2 nights, if you plan on staying longer and have suitcases go for a bigger room. The hotel has obviously undergone some sort of refurbishment in last couple of years which meant carpets and fittings etc. all still newish. Would definitely recommend for a short break.

We were made to feel very welcome on arrival and throughout our stay, which lead to a very enjoyable experience.
We had our dog with us and it was great to stay in a nice room with our dog rather than being relegated to the old shabby rooms, as is so often the case in other establishments.
The hotel was clean, tidy, welcoming and the breakfast was delicious.

Lovely hotel. Obvious drawback is lack of lift but that was clearly spelt out in the particulars. Didn’t particularly like being given a bedroom with 2 extra single beds in it. Had booked a double room which had an armchair according to the photo and would have preferred that really. But not a big issue. Breakfast was really good - freshly cooked and great choice. The staff were absolutely fantastic.

It’s a beautiful hotel and the breakfasts were really good staff friendly and efficient in everything they do.

If we had one complaint it could do with a bit more soundproofing we could hear next bedrooms tv on late at night and 6 in the morning, it’s an old building but the walls were very thin a couple of nights was enough for that reason alone.

Lovely ambience as you step into this hotel. Staff very accommodating and eager to please and sort out any problems. Our tricky shower was mended immediately and more support given when we had an issue. Really enjoyed our stay and would certainly stay again despite the lack of lift.

Our second stay here through a Travelzoo deal and we weren't disappointed.
We couldn't check in before 3.00 but the reception staff were happy to keep our bags safe and advise on car parking so that we could start exploring the lovely city of Chester straight away.
Beautifully presented and very clean throughout. Bedrooms are large with everything you need to enjoy a comfortable stay.
Fantastic breakfast was included in the price.
We would definitely stay there again.

All the rooms are upstairs and there is no lift. The steps are very steep and may not be suitable for everyone.

Access to our room was up two flights of stairs (no lift). However, the reception staff cheerfully helped carry luggage to the room. Even so, this hotel is not suitable for guests with mobility issues. We parked in the Grosvenor Centre car park using Hozah autopay (requires prior registration). This worked well and we found a way through the shopping centre using its lifts and smooth floors which was ideal for our wheeled suitcases and which took us most of the way to the hotel.

Lovely independant hotel. Tasteful decor including comfortable lounge, comfortable and clean room. Tea and coffee supplies and bottled water supplied each day. Friendly, helpful and professional staff. Breakfast was plentiful with a good choice of cold cereal, dried and fresh fruit, nuts etc also pastries. A good choice of hot food cooked to order. Lovely building. Nice welcome. Large family room but with limited storage. Nowhere to hang long items like dresses and nowhere for coats especially if wet- perhaps a hook on back of door? Only one chair- this room would sleep 3 people. Plenty of room to accommodate more chairs instead of sitting on beds. Breakfast excellent- lots of choice and great service. Would definitely recommend!

The Townhouse is a nice hotel that seems to have been renovanarrowted recently, however they have not replaced the windows. Clean and comfortable. Good breakfast.

Hotel absolutely immaculate, lovely bedroom, excellent breakfast. We loved our weekend there, right in the middle of town so able to go back for a coffee. Token for the car park meant that we were able to park for 24 hours in the city centre for £10.50

Recently refurbished Georgian Town House. Very comfortable room (might be small for 2). Stylish bathroom but problem with water temperature in shower on 2nd day. Excellent breakfast. Unnecessary prosecco - I didn't want a free bottle and left it behind. Never good value for single travellers! But this is a pleasant independent hotel in an excellent location for visiting Chester and I would stay there again.

New fixture and fittings but when opening the shower room door, there is about 2cm between door and toilet! The mirror on the wall has the sink and toilet Infront of it, so difficult for my husband to see to shave!. Everything else was great and would gladly return. Hotel is in a great location

Excellent almost all round,particularly the staff. Breakfast first class. Parking discount with Pepper Street excellent.Our room,probably because we were on a "deal", was small and the bathroom miniscule with the sink placed above the lavatory. No 8 Not to be recommended for anyone over 12 stone!

Check in was smooth and bottle chilled Prosecco waiting in our room. Room comfortable although shower room was quite small. Breakfast was good (both of us had variations of full english) and service good too. Staff we met all nice and friendly. We opted to eat and drink out so cannot comment on this although I do feel we may have done this if pricing had been more attractive. This being said, the overall deal for the 2 night B & B break was very good value for money. Hotel doe's not have car parking although it is based well in the town centre.

Large comfortable rooms with modern spacious en suite. Could do with a pair of easy chairs. The building is tall, 4 floors , although ground floor is basement, 1st floor(up steps from pavement) is reception, dining and bar, then 2 accommodation floors. 3rd floor being top floor. (4th) There is no lift, so you need to be fit, and travel light. The majority of customers were our age group (60-70+) Staff were very friendly and always keen to help, a credit to the hotel. Meals were excellent and well presented.

This hotel would benefit greatly with the installation of a lift, I,m sure there is room in the stairwell to house one. Even a 'dumb waiter' for sending luggage upstairs would help.

A superb night away with a friend. Staff were fantastic, they couldn't do enough for us. We booked an afternoon tea on arrival, which was just delicious. The bedroom and facilities were lovely and breakfast the next morning was excellent. Can't fault it. We would definitely stay again.

This hotel is located very close to the city centre and not too far from the train station. The staff are very cheerful, attentive, polite and nothing was too much trouble. They looked after our bags on check out day so we could spend more time in Chester. The breakfast was fantastic everything cooked fresh to order and an excellent choice. We will definitely return

Room compact ! albeit well-appointed ; ensuite far too small and inappropriately set out (toilet and vanity wash-handbasin combined as one unit which was impractical and we have never experienced in many many years of travelling and hotels. Aware from booking that there is no lift but steepness and number of flights of stairs to reach the room was unbelievable. Whilst aware there was only public pay car parking available, this was a significant distance from the accommodation when having to carry cases. On a 'deal' so god value for money; would not be at all happy if paying market rate. Publicity should state that steepness and width of certain flights of stairs could present accessibility issues as does distance to car parking (whilst I acknowledge it is in the centre of the city)

lovely old hotel recently refurbished to high standard wonderful breakfast, lovely friendly staff, the location was fabulous central to all Chester has to offer, the only thing not great was the bathroom which was tiny especially considering the size of the bedroom, but that is a small issue that would not stop me recommending this place

WE had a wonderful couple of nights at The Townhouse. Staff members were all really friendly and helpful. The only reason that I didn't give 5 stars for the rooms is that our bathroom had a slightly musty smell (it had no exterior windows, so I don't know what could be done about it). We enjoyed a bottle of prosecco in the terrace area and had a couple of games of pool. There were also art materials available for children. Our room was spacious (we were allocated a 4 person room).

Visited this hotel previously,but since the re-furbishment it is a vast improvement.
Rooms are beautiful although the bathrooms are quite small and the shower cubicle would not accommodate anybody that was on the large side.
Breakfast is a good variety of Continental then you choose your cooked preference.
First morning breakfast was lovely,second morning unfortunately the breakfast wasn't as nice.
Toast was hard with the poached eggs,poached eggs were hard,plentiful supply of tea and coffee. We were asked if we wanted toast we said yes but it never materialised, I had to ask a second time and only 1 toast rack was brought between 4 of us.
The restuarant was busy on the second morning and only the same amount of staff on duty. I would certainly visit this hotel again but would prefer a room that wasn't up in the attic space.

We really enjoyed our 2 night stay. The hotel was well situated in the city of Chester and the staff were all really friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately there I'd no lift so it was quite a chore having to climb up 2 flights of steep stirs to access our room but it was a nice comfortable and very clean room with a comfortable bed.
The only downside was that although the room was very large, the bathroom was tiny and there was nowhere at all to put your toiletries etc and in fact there wasn't a proper washbasin in the bathroom just a tiny hand basin like you'd find in a downstairs cloakroom, so it was very difficult when trying to wash your face.
That said there were good quality toiletries supplied and lovely big towels and the water pressure in the shower was good.
The breakfast was outstanding. Quality ingredients and plenty of choice all beautifully served in the dining room or if preferred outside.
We were delighted with out stay and Chester is well worth a couple of days exploration.

Fantastic find on Travelzoo, right in the city centre, with easy reach for everything to see and explore in a beautiful city.
Hotel spotless in every way , rooms spacious and comfortable,especially the king size bed.
Breakfast was as good a breakfast I have had anywhere, with a good choice and staff very attentive.

looks like the hotel has recently been refurbished, very comfortable. we were in room 3 and I would describe it as compact, but this didnt bother us.
Breakfast was good, staff were excellent, and hotel is located smack bang in the middle of Chester. Travelzoo deal was very good, and yes if I go to Chester again this will be my first choice hotel.

Lovely hotel recently refurbished. The room was spacious with comfy beds, the only disappointment was the space for hanging clothes couldn’t hang up dresses everything else was lovely. Would definitely go back again but only for one night due to the lack of a wardrobe. The breakfast was very nice and tasty. They have a pleasant bar with a lovely outside area which is covered. Not suitable for wheelchair users as there is stone steps into the hotel and rooms on upper levels

We had a lovely stay. Room was spacious and well appointed. The hotel was tastefully decorated and immaculate. Breakfast choices were excellent and delicious. Location was perfect and parking was just down the road at the shopping centre £10 for 24 hours. Great place to stay in the heart of Chester

A big Thankyou to Laura who took time and trouble to find my earring in our room ,Thankyou . Also must mention Darren the door man on reception on night shift . Very friendly and funny and helpful.
Very clean , food was brilliant as was the service ,
Bed very comfy, although we were over the main road there was little noise .
Very close to everything , fabulous city to visit .

Great location near river and city walls and close to centre. Rooms a bit small especially bathroom but adequate and clean. Staff lovely and very helpful - particularly ones we dealt with - Becky and the Spanish lady whose name we didn't get.

Prosecco on arrival was good - we had ours chilled and had later in the beer garden - very pleasant. Parking a little bit of an issue, but shopping centre 5 mins away

Lovely Lucy the receptionist helped carry our luggage to our room upon arrival. The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. The only thing missing in the room was a window to open to let in some air but other than that no complaints at all. The service and the food at breakfast was excellent. The Townhouse is in a great location with it being just a few minutes walk down to the river or a few minutes to the town centre for all the shops cafes and bars. I would definitely stay here again.

We arrived to be told that there was no booking!
The room was much bigger than I was expecting, and quite comfortable. Bathroom tiny.
Breakfast was as expected, and very pleasant.
Our room (18) was spoiled by the sounds of the music which plays constantly in the reception areas. It took four requests to persuade the staff to lower the volume.

As with many conversions of this type, the hotel has a certain charm but also doesn't quite hit the comfort levels of more recent buildings. Floors and staircases creak outside and above the room. Power sockets were installed before guests started to travel with several devices that need regular recharging.

not suitable for disabled or elderly people with mobility issues. I have a blue badge and found it very difficult to park and we were put on he 4th floor.
We complained and did get the room changed,
The restaurant only opens lunch time so we had to go out to eat.
There was no one in the bar other than us so no atmosphere. Certainly wouldn’t go back.

A premium feel hotel close to central Chester. Rooms excellent breakfast very good . Only criticism is parking is expensive and the local NCP [which the hotel have a discount arrangement ] is a 10 minute walk away. Not much fun in the rain.

We arranged a visit to Chester with our friends as a result of spotting the Travelzoo offer…the four of us were totally impressed with the Townhouse on all counts! From the moment we arrived the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and the BBQ (Father’s Day) in the courtyard was a great way to start our visit. The en-suite bedrooms were huge and very well furnished. The complimentary drinks and snacks were a lovely touch. The choice of what to have at breakfast was one of the best we have ever had. Ten out of ten - we’re definitely going to return here!

Absolutely outstanding Hotel. You can tell the calibre of a Hotel by the the little things. Every day room tidy and the housekeeping team even fold back the top sheet of toilet paper. Such fa ulous attention to detail. Outrageously satisfying breakfast with just about everything to cater for ALL tastes.
Location great for the Rows and Northgate etc. Two mins stroll to the Riverbank.

Lovely hotel in an ideal location, literally just a short walk from the city centre and the Cathedral. Lovely large comfortable room (we had the one at the top). Would happily stay again.

Note there is no parking onsite but there is plenty nearby (we were recommended the Grosvenor Shopping Centre car park which is not the one they give the discount for but both end up being around £10/day and the Grosvenor is thought to be safer). A minor point is the stairwells are quite narrow and a bit on the steep side.

We had a lovely couple of days in Chester, hotel was perfect. Staff were all really nice, helpful & pleasant, especially Nicola & the night staff/ barman sorry didn't catch his name. Lots of stairs but we knew about that from reading reviews before we booked luckily we are fit enough to get our steps in. Our room was really nice, we were on the front of the Hotel so we could hear the traffic going by. This wouldn't put us off our next visit as we will certainly be back. 20+ out of 10😊 Breakfast was delicious too plenty to choose from & plenty of it.

we were looking forward to another stay at the townhouse hotel, this was our 4th visit, things have changed, no evening catering, as we were unaware it had become a B&B we always enjoyed the evening fare. A severe shortage of staff in the evening, only one man running around trying to do everything which led to slow service (in our opinion not his fault) otherwise all was well

The townhouse was newly refurbished and clean and well decorated. Stag were friendly and helpful and treated everyone like a return guest. Hospitality was very high quality. Breakfast was excellent. Freshly cooked and to a high standard.
There were slot of stairs to our top floor room which wouldn’t suit everyone but we didn’t have a problem Car parking was close by in an NCP car park which the hotel could offer at a cheaper rate.

We were greeted by a lovely member of staff who welcomed us to the hotel which is extremely clean and tidy throughout. Although our room was on the top floor and looked over the back of the hotel it was large and spacious. Wonderful breakfasts and we were able to leave our bags on the last day so as we could spend longer in the city.

The location is great to visit the centre of Chester and although it does not boast any car parking, the secure central Grosvenor Shopping Centre car park is not far away and at £10 for 24 hours is good value. The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard with comfortable bedrooms, a great breakfast and very welcoming and helpful staff throughout.

we recently stayed there for 2 nights. very pleasant and helpful staff who were all very cheery. the room was excellent with good facilities and decorated to a high standard. the breakfasts were excellent too with a good choice to suit all tastes. the location is also excellent within a few minutes walk for the city center,river and the wall with lots of pubs and restaurants. highly recommended.

What a great find! We’ve been to Chester many times but never stayed at The Townhouse. Following a recent refurbishment the place is immaculate, smells wonderful and the staff were all so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely look to stay here again
