Take a leisurely walk or boat ride at the River Dee, two minutes' walk away. The Groves, a scenic riverside path, has a choice of cafes, pubs, and restaurants.
Head into nearby Grosvenor Park to visit the Roman Amphitheatre and gardens. It is 10 minutes' walk away.
The city walls are known for being some of the most ancient and complete in Britain. They offer an elevated position from which to admire the city. Access points are at Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate, and Bridgegate.

Window propped by wooden block. Problem with shower too hot. Flights of stairs with no lift. Just felt a little dingy. Although hotel is in an excellent location and staff very nice.

This hotel was very pleasant, so close to the city centre, easily walkable to everything. We parked at the Roodie car park, then moved to the free parking outside the hotel on Saturday after 6pm, as free on Sunday. Staff were fabulous and very helpful. Room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was great, especially as you could have from the buffet table and order a hot breakfast. Coffee was very good. There is no restaurant, but plenty nearby. Bar was open late in the evenings, with a decent selection. The rooms are on 1st floor upwards with no lift, we rang ahead and asked for a 1st floor which they kindly gave us. Great stay, highly recommended.

Unfortnnately our room was at the top of the hotel, meaning we had to climb 5 flight of stairs everytime with the last 2 flights being quite steep; we were aware there was no lift at the hotel but we did struggle and my friend and myself would not return here if we couldn't book a room on a lower floor.However the staff did offer to carry our cases up the stairs which we thankfully accepted.
The ensuite bathroom was very small too; the sink being the size of a tiny downstairs loo and my friend couldn't actually manage to dry herself in there due to the lack of space.
Apart from these things it was a lovely hotel with the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and the breakfast being it strengths.

There is no parking attached to the hotel but staff provided a recommendation and I could drop my bags off en route. The hotel is old, with character, which I really liked but it would be unsuitable for visitors with mobility issues.

Our room was up four flights of steep stairs and no lift which was very difficult for two of our party. The breakfast was excellent although there were no evening meals available which was disappointing and meant we had to go out looking for a suitable place to dine every night. Only downside was the amount of stairs. We knew beforehand that there was no lift but as we were in an attic room ( which was spacious ) the final two flights of stairs were very steep. Understand that due to age of building a lift may not have been possible.

The staff are friendly and welcoming; nothing was too much trouble. The rom was clean, spacious and comfortable, with a god sized en suite. There were tea and instant coffee making facilities In the room. Biscuits were replaced daily. The breakfast was excellent. There was also iced water available all day.

Lighting in the room was poor, the wash-handbasin was tiny, the wall mirror protruding over the basin and the large tap took up space too. Suitable for (small) hand washing only.
Note: for anyone with mobility issues there are several flights of stairs to negotiate, some steep, unless occupying a ground floor room. I recommend the hotel but find the stairs too challenging for me to stay there again.

As previously, we found tge staff to be very friendly, welcoming and considerate. All requests were handled courteous and efficiently including a room change for a couple in our group. The rooms and communal areas were clean, fresh and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent both in range of choices available and the quality of food provided. We enjoyed using the bar area for playing cards and "trying to play pool". The receptionist was exceptional in the service she provided. Thanks for a lovely stay and we hope to be back again.

We absolutely enjoyed our two day break at this atmospheric hotel. Breakfast was fabulous with real tea (no bags, how rare these days!) and full English cooked to perfection. As we all know, the country was snowed under, but the hotel was warm, cosy and welcoming. Will we go again? Without a doubt!

We were promptly checked in upon arrival and given details of where our room was located and what time breakfast was the following day. Fantastic Hotel very welcoming from reception staff, great location for everything in Chester. Bottle of Prosecco in the room on arrival. Rooms were spotless and modern. Breakfast and staff were excellent. Can't fault anything about our stay. We would definitely use this Hotel again.

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at The Townhouse. An excellent location. Handy for the river and town centre. Our bedroom was spacious and quiet. The whole hotel looks as if it has been fairly recently refurbished and also has a comfortable lounge. There was a good choice for breakfast which was cooked well. The staff were all friendly and helpful and we would definitely go there again.

We had an excellent stay at this hotel. Perfectly situated close to shops & river. The rooms were all immaculate & warm & cosy. Bathroom was beautiful. The staff couldn’t do enough for us & were extremely helpful & pleasant. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a fantastic two nights . The beautiful Georgian building was lovely inside and was so well presented sensitive to the period . Excellent beds , excellent bathroom. Actually the word excellent could be used for every aspect of the hotel including staff , breakfast ,outside area ,management , location and value for money . We would highly recommend it to anyone !!!!

The travelzoo offer was great value for money making it possible to take an overnight stay with a friend. Location close to river is excellent and rooms were well furnished with everything you could need eg fan, hairdryer,water etc.

All the staff were friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble and a breakfast cooked to order is an improvement on self-service buffet! Definitely worth a repeat visit.

Mixed experience. Hotel redone nicely but for younger people without luggage (esp.large!). at least 30(bu could be 50)steps to room-no lift. Very poor lighting in room(esp by some beds)V poor wardrobe facilities Very new high tech. tv(no instr!)Hot rooms even with windows that open(no aircon) Bathroom nice but no place /shelves to put toiletries. Difficult to use high tech phone with no instructions (could be vital in emergency! then need to go down 40 steps)

This hotel is designed by 40 year old for 40 year olds! If you have big luggage or have mobility problems or above 65-70 it is not for you! If you need more light (eye probs) or need cool rooms or have clothes to hang up, not for you! Good points decorated nicely nice bathroom comfortable beds, friendly staff good food. Some points can be addressed but basic flaws (steps air con) cannot

Chose this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary as it was close to the river and central for all the main attractions in Chester. The room was a decent size with a comfortable bed. It had tea & coffee facilities which we liked. The breakfast was included in the Travelzoo deal and it was really nice and set us up for the day. There are lots of restaurants in the area and all the main attractions in Chester are in walking distance. The staff were very friendly & helpful and we would certainly stay here again on our next trip to Chester.

Great location. Staff very helpful and breakfast was great, cooked ingredients all good quality. The only negative is the heat. A table fan in a 4 bedded room, with only one window which opened 7 inches it was suffocatingly hot, I didn't sleep a wink.

Nothing at all to complain about at the Townhouse. Staff were very helpful, polite and professional. Breakfast was excellent and plenty of choice. Location of the Townhouse was perfect. You could reach everywhere in the city within 30 minutes stroll. signage in Chester is not the best but that's nothing to do with the hotel !!! All in all if you want to visit Chester (and its well worth a visit) then The Townhouse is highly recommended. I will certainly be back. Thanks to all for making our stay even more enjoyable.

Prior to our visit we spoke to Becky in Reception and when we arrived it was a pleasure to meet such a pleasant young lady. We also enjoyed conversations with Nicola (the owner) and also chatted to Rita, Laura, Pedro and Jeff, who were all so friendly and helpful but also extremely professional. Breakfast had the most amazing choices and well done to Scott - the Chef.
