Overview

De Vere Orchard Hotel is set in landscaped parkland within the grounds of The University of Nottingham and opposite East Midlands Conference Centre. The hotel uses state-of-the-art emission-reducing technology and is highly energy efficient.

It's 15 minutes' walk from Wollaton Hall -- a "fabulous" (Lonely Planet) Elizabethan mansion that houses the city's Natural History Museum. It also featured in the final instalment of Christopher Nolan's "Batman" films. Admission to this Grade I-listed country house is free. There is a walled botanical garden, which is open Sundays, and a deer park and Industrial Museum in the grounds. Highfields Park, a 20-minute walk from the hotel, has a boating lake, and bowling and croquet facilities.

The centre of Nottingham -- "a dynamic county capital with big-city aspirations, atmospheric historical sights, and a buzzing music and club scene", according to Lonely Planet -- is a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Here you can visit Nottingham Castle or the City of Caves -- a subterranean network of over 500 caves dating back to the Dark Ages. There is also the Galleries of Justice, a crime museum that occupies Nottingham's old courthouse and gaol.

De Vere Orchard Hotel has 202 bedrooms, all with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Bramleys Brasserie restaurant -- named after the Nottinghamshire Bramley apple -- serves modern British cuisine. There is also a bar, an outside terrace, two biodiverse roof gardens and a gym.

The hotel and grounds are really beautiful and relaxing. The food in the restaurant is very good.

I booked in July, but upon arrival, the receptionist couldnt find a room for us and had to check with another member of staff before we were given a room. She told us that the hotel was full as it was freshers week at Nottingham University. She said the restaurant was also fully booked, so we had to have dinner at 6.30pm. The restaurant manager said (even at that time) they were out of several of the dishes on the menu. On returning to the room allocated, we found that the TV wasnt working, so I reported by phone to Reception and a Housekeeper arrived and made initial checks but said she would get maintenance to sort it for us. No-one returned, so we were unable to watch TV during our stay. Breakfast was rather chaotic too. The staff were under a lot of pressure, especially in the restaurant and reception. After staying at the usually very relaxing De Vere several times before, this was a most disappointing and rather stressful return.

A bit difficult to find when coming from the north,we had to go practically all way thro'the university campus, before finding the hotel ,could have been better signposted.Entering from the E/S we found it was much easier.

The breakfast buffet was good. I was with a group and at the time of booking the table I was not told about the group menu which was the only option open to us. The menu was limited. Poor quality and not value for money.

Other Comments
The evening meal was far from good as it arrived on cold plates and the food was cold.We sent it back and it returned after being microwaved and there was NO mint sauce available and we chose LAMB.The mash potato had turned to what we would call SLOP as it was runny. Not able to eat it.Pity the food was not as good as the hotel and room. Also not as good as our previous visit.

Nice rooms. Friendly service. Good location
Other Comments
Restaurant very noisy. Although the overall offer was good value the food portions were not very generous / missing some nice touches e.g. dips with the chicken, side salad with the burgers, the mussels were starter portion size, the cod portions were not consistent and small. I would have felt rather short changed if I had paid full price for the evening meal.
