Why We Love This Hotel

  • Facilities at the hotel include a gym (complimentary access), as well as a spa, hot tubs, and thermal areas (supplements apply).
  • Located in the centre of the market town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd, Ruthin Castle dates back to 1277 and remained part of the Crown Estate until 1632, so it counts King Edward I, Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I among its former owners.
  • You can explore the nooks and crannies of the 18th-century hotel building, including the octagonal panelled Library Bar and Bertie's Restaurant.
  • The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is five minutes' drive from the hotel. Explore the 13th-century Chirk Castle (a National Trust property) or the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both are less than 40 minutes' drive away.
  • Loggerheads Country Park, a wooded river valley with dramatic cliffs and outcrops, and the ruins of 13th-century Denbigh Castle, are both less than 20 minutes' drive from the hotel.
  • Eryri National Park—home to Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales, and a host of walking opportunities—is 45 minutes' drive away.

The setting and the room was good. My brother's meal was very good. I have given a low star rating for value for money as the break was spoiled by the evening meal.

The chicken burger was off that was served at dinner. First of all a beef burger which wasnt ordered was brought to the table. It was sent back as the chicken burger had been ordered. When the chicken burger came it smelled badly and was grey in colour. It was too late then to order anything else as my brother had already finished his meal. The manager said he would be in touch about it but never got back with an explanation or apology. The wine was given complimentary but it doesnt make up for a spoiled evening on a one night break.

Fantastic location and building. Hotel is a big old building and although the owners are trying it needs a lot of attention. To be fair a good clean up everywhere and some pots of paint would make a huge difference. The staff are very friendly, the restaurant food of a good standard but the breakfast was very disappointing, no cereals or very few, no fresh fruit and self service cooked breakfast wasn't great. The serving pots had big heavy lids, which people found difficult to open and close so the food dried up and was cold!! The hotel could be fantastic but needs money spending on it and that's not easy in these difficult times.

Two-night break; pre-booked dinner for both nights. Everything was very good. Signage to room could be improved, as could satellite TV reception (very few channels available). Dinners were excellent, even if choice was quite restricted. Breakfast was good, though never any jams/marmalade available.
