Why We Love This Hotel

  • Facilities at the hotel include a gym (complimentary access), as well as a spa, hot tubs, and thermal areas (supplements apply).
  • Located in the centre of the market town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd, Ruthin Castle dates back to 1277 and remained part of the Crown Estate until 1632, so it counts King Edward I, Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I among its former owners.
  • Explore the nooks and crannies of the 18th-century hotel building, including the octagonal panelled Library Bar and Bertie's Restaurant.
  • The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is five minutes' drive from the hotel. Explore the 13th-century Chirk Castle (a National Trust property) or the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both are less than 40 minutes' drive away.
  • Loggerheads Country Park, a wooded river valley with dramatic cliffs and outcrops, and the ruins of 13th-century Denbigh Castle, are both less than 20 minutes' drive from the hotel.
  • Eryri National Park—home to Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales, and a host of walking opportunities—is 45 minutes' drive away.

We found having to pay extra for some meals was a surprise and the potato’s and veg came as extras and we were charged for those so not really included in the meal deal .

Check in excellent staff very friendly,. The evening meal was exceptional but I found the breakfast very poor. I was expecting more because the evening meal was so good.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was OK - but supplements for dinner (we had a package inclusive of dinner for 2) meant that if you wanted more than a burger or bar food you were paying more.

Room was partially renovated - bathroom was good - room was austere, bed a smalll double and not a great mattress and in a part of the castle which is still being renovated. Overall the castle is full of 'bric a brac' and major items completed like painting in the corridors are amateurish and messy. This is further heightened by things like the state of the road (potholes) to the overflow capark and mud trail to the hotel, broken glass on the steps and crumbling paint on the lion pedestals...all together not a great introduction to the hotel.

Apart from the receptionist the staff were great, the hotel was unique and atmospheric, grounds amazing, food not enough choice but good. I said no to going back in your questions but would like to, to enjoy it without the problems. May take him up on his offer.

The answers aren't specific yes or no. The problem was we paid £60 extra to get a King size bed as we are 2 ladies. I rang to ask first and told they were available, I emailed to ask for confirmation. When we arrived it wasn't king size. Eventually We were given another room (didn't get checked in till 5pm) Found that there was no hot water in the sink, and there were cleanliness issues. There was no soap/shampoo/body wash in the dispenser, half a toilet roll. They tried to fix the hot water the next day but couldn't. Reception said that reservations hadn't notified them about the King size bed!! The Manager at first tried to refer us back to Travel Zoo but I told him we had paid the Hotel. He agreed to give us a Part refund and a free stay if we want to go back.
