Why We Love This Hotel

  • Located in the centre of the market town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd, Ruthin Castle dates back to 1277 and remained part of the Crown Estate until 1632, so it counts King Edward I, Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I among its former owners
  • You can explore the nooks and crannies of the 18th-century hotel building, including the octagonal panelled Library Bar and Bertie's Restaurant
  • The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is five minutes' drive from the hotel. You could explore the 13th-century Chirk Castle (a National Trust property) or the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both are less than 40 minutes' drive away
  • Loggerheads Country Park, a wooded river valley with dramatic cliffs and outcrops, and the ruins of 13th-century Denbigh Castle, are both less than 20 minutes' drive from the hotel
  • Snowdonia National Park, home to the highest mountain in Wales and a host of walking opportunities, is 45 minutes' drive away
  • Facilities at the hotel include a gym (access included in the rate), as well as a spa, hot tubs, and thermal areas (supplements apply for access and treatments)

Lovely location and hotel. Although clearly in need of some cosmetic work, it's still an impressive building. Evening meal and breakfast were impressive and Ruthin is a lovely small town.

Hotel is lovely, although looking a bit tired in certain areas. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The meal choice was limited and there wasn’t enough variety if you are dining for more than one night. Spa facilities were excellent.

At our age (over 70) our room was too far from reception as the lift was out of action.

We brought friends, who hadn't visited before, as a surprise. It was still impressive, but I was VERY DISAPPOINTED at the lack of heating in the common rooms. When we arrived at 4pm, we had a drink but stayed in our coats. Later before and after dinner there was no attempt at vented heating. I asked the waiter to turn on the small electric fire but he shrugged and said it hadn't worked for weeks. The rooms are huge and cold. I had brought a nice dress and had to wear a fleece on top. It was March and 1 degree outside. The other room had an open fire that hadn't been topped up and was useless for heat unless you were right in front of it. So after dinner after shivering for 30 mins, we went back to the rooms depriving you of additional drinks revenue. Also our friends were put off returning because of this.
