Why We Love It

  • The hotel's bar and restaurant hold an AA Rosette
  • "Retaining original and historical features" (The AA), it's a characterful property with wooden floors and leather armchairs
  • There are plenty of things to see in the area, including Blenheim Palace -- Sir Winston Churchill's birthplace -- and National Trust property Waddesdon Manor
  • Silverstone, the home of British motor racing, is a 40-minute drive away

The Mercure Thame Lambert Hotel is an 18th-century former coaching inn in the village of Aston Rowant near the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Oxford, Blenheim Palace (Sir Winston Churchill's birthplace), Waddesdon Manor and The Roald Dahl Museum are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel. Other local highlights include Vale Brewery and the market town of Thame, which is around 10 minutes' drive from The Mercure Thame Lambert Hotel. Silverstone, the home of the British grand prix, is a 40-minute drive away and Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, is less than an hour away.

The hotel features wooden floors, leather armchairs and decorative rugs. The AA-Rosette awarded Kite Restaurant serves British food, and snacks and afternoon tea are available from the bar.

The Double Inn Rooms are in the main building, and all rooms have free Wi-Fi.

Travelzoo tip: Rather than driving into Oxford and paying city parking fees, catch the Oxford Tube bus from Lewknor, which is a 15-minute walk from The Lambert Hotel.

Some confusion at checking out. Break was pre-paid but despite it being on system at check in time when it came to checking out the reception could not find it on their system which caused some delay and no little annoyance and was somewhat embarrassing with other customers present. Had to ask for manager to be called. He was able to find the record of the payment but was not over-apologetic. I assume the re-branding to "Mercure" will be cited as the reason.

Decor in reception, bar and restaurant was lovely.
Other Comments
Although a large bedroom/bed disappointed that the Wi-Fi wasn't working, there was a large tear in the duvet cover, toilet seat was broken and bathroon was grubby. Also evening meal was overcooked and not as stated on menu and service very slow. Breakfast also overcooked.

We had requested a twin room but we're given a double which was changed upon request, however before being moved we found a used bandaid behind the bathroom door. We were told that the Travelzoo clients were always put in those rooms where there was not a twin room. Our new twin room, in a different part of the hotel, was very spacious and away from the road noise. Three out of five bulbs in the bathroom were out and the main light and both bedside lights were out, the TV remote did not work. The lid on the toilet was broken but all of these thing were fixed while we were at dinner. The staff are all very pleasant and helpful and it has to be said we did have a lovely stay.
