The 189-room Sofitel Marrakech Palais Imperial is a former Moorish palace in Marrakesh that overlooks the Taurus Mountains.
The luxury property is in Hivernage, surrounded by private luscious gardens with palm trees and indigenous plants. It's a 15-minute walk from Djemaa el Fna, the city's main square in the medina, described by Lonely Planet as an "open-air theatre" -- known for snake charmers and exotic foods.
The building's traditional architecture and ochre-coloured walls give it a charm of an old-world Marrakesh. Features include free Wi-Fi, two outdoor swimming pools and a hammam. The hotel welcomes families. There's a children's swimming pool, a kids' club, a playground and a babysitting service.
There are four restaurants, including Mediterranean, French and barbeque. Of the hotel's four bars, we like the sound of Lawrence Bar, where you can watch the sun set from the terrace. The Palais Darkum tea lounge serves mint tea and fresh almond pastries.
Guest rooms have pillow menus, bathrobes, satellite TV and private balconies.
The property has a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Award and was recently listed as one its theTop 25 Hotels in Morocco.
