Overview

With an enviable city-centre location, Hotel Indigo Newcastle is a modern property in Grainger Town that takes inspiration from the surrounding Neoclassical buildings.

The hotel is less than five minutes' walk from Newcastle railway station and Grainger Market, a Grade I-listed covered market that was the largest in Europe when it was built. Sage Gateshead, one of Tyneside's premier concert destinations, and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art are around 20 minutes' walk away on the Quayside.

Newcastle Castle, the medieval fortification that gave the city its name, is 10 minutes away on foot; head to the roof for great views of the city and the River Tyne. Quayside, an area with popular bars and restaurants, is a 15-minute walk away.

We recommend a trip to Jesmond Dene, a steep-sided river valley in the north of the city. You can follow the Ouseburn as it flows south through the valley, stop for pictures by its waterfall and ruined water mill, and maybe spot a kingfisher or red squirrel along the way. Start your walk from the Castles Farm Road entrance -- around 20 minutes from the hotel by bus or Metro.

The hotel's on-site Marco Pierre White Steakhouse serves classic British dishes. There is also a cocktail bar. Items from the mini bar are included in the price, and there's 24-hour room service and an on-site gym.

Location of the hotel was good, very near the station and within 10 minutes walk of both the city centre and the quayside. All staff, reception, bar, waiting and cleaning, were friendly and professional. The rooms ( we were on the 4th floor) were a good size although quite narrow and had had a high window so it a little dark. The furniture was quite large for a narrow room so it was difficult to walk past the end of the bed. The bed was comfortable. The minibar was complementary and had 2 bottles of water, 2 cans of drink, a kitkat and packet of crisps. We enjoyed the free bottle of prosecco which was part of our package from Travelzoo. We had am excellent evening meal in the restaurant. The 3 course meal was extremely good and the service was excellent The shower room was roomy with a lovely shower and good quality products available. We would certainly return

Room had thin walls so could hear noise from rooms adjoining and above and below. Narrower room than appears on website. Otherwise good.

The hotel is not obliged to have the room ready until 3.00. As we arrived early, 11.30, and were having lunch in the hotel we requested that if possible we could have the room around 2.00. We got it at 2.40 having been in the hotel reception and restaurant continuously for almost three hours. While I recognize 3.00 was the official time, as is the case with most hotels, housekeeping can flex their preparations or reception can flex their allocations to go some way towards accommodating early arrivals.
