The Olde Bell first opened its doors in 1135 for visitors to the nearby Benedictine Priory. Over the years the inn has hosted Winston Churchill, Dwight D Eisenhower, Elizabeth Taylor, and Cary Grant. Overnight stays are £79 for Travelzoo members, saving 43–55% on the direct price.

Parts of The Olde Bell date back to the 1130s. This makes it possibly the oldest inn in England, and among the oldest in the world. Its sanctus bell signalled to the monks that an important visitor had arrived. It still hangs over the door.
The restaurant serves dishes made with produce grown in the inn's own kitchen garden.
Superior rooms are in the historic inn building or in the Malt House. Deluxe rooms are larger and are set within the Brick Barn. Luxury rooms are in the Main Inn or Malt House and each have a claw-foot bath tub.
The property is in the picturesque village of Hurley, close to the River Thames. "There isn't a prettier village on this graceful stretch of the Thames," says The Times.
Marlow is a charming town known for high-end restaurants and celebrity residents. It is an hour's walk away, most of it along the river.

Room upgrade as original room cold. Room could have had a rug to make it more comfy. Heated towel rail was rusty and didn't work. Food and staff excellent.

The menu was unimaginative and some food disappointing. Our chosen wine wasn't available and the replacement was just plonked on the table without ceremony. Our 'superior' room had a good bathroom except for a rusty and not-heating towel rail and there was an underlying industrial noise from the hotel's heating system. The room was large but sparsely furnished and decorated, contrasting with the quirky-abundance of post-impressionist and surrealist images in the dining room.
Other Comments
Most staff were pleasant and helpful except for the one wine waiter who plonked our unopened screw top bottle on the table without comment.

We were visiting our daughter nearby so a perfect location for us.
The hotel is situated in a delightful village and very quiet position with ply of parking.
The hotel appears to be being refurbished but the reception and entrance in the original old building could benefit from an update .
Our room had been redecorated and was a great size.
We had to get the heating sorted as rather cold and ask for tea coffee etc which hadn’t been replenished but very quickly rectified.
We ate at the hotel and the food was varied and well cooked. The breakfast was a bit hectic as busy and the eggs were cold and overcooked but other than that plenty of choice of cereal pastries fruit and yoghurt. They would benefit from more than one hot drinks machine as it became very busy with people queueing around the tables making it not very relaxing.
Overall a lovely short stay in a beautiful village with lots of walks along the Thames. Very good value.

Several, items that were described on Menu were not available as described (Lack of herb butter & Peppercorn Sauce) with not being informed prior to ordering! Picked up on serving hence lack of poor service too! Bed could do with a headboard to assist with support of pillows and fan not working in bathroom, though room was decorated nicely. The bar and additional seating area after having evening meal lacked any real atmosphere or cosiness that one would normally associate with an older property. Lastly, as there was a wedding being undertaken in the adjacent tithe barn, the sound properties of the room were severely lacking resulting in a headache and unease until midnight when admittedly the noise level vastly reduced.

Only small gripe is they seem understaffed in the restaurant which impacts on time being served drinks and food. Other than that, very good indeed..

Room had no chairs and the washbasin in the bathroom leaked.
The Prosecco that was provided as part of the package was left in the room - no ice bucket was provided.
The meal on the first night was not very good; my pork was Ok but the crackling was like leather and my wife's Caesar salad was tasteless.
Breakfasts were very disappointing. I have never had a good hot buffet style breakfast, and this was particularly bad. If a pub / hotel can't be bothered to serve a breakfast fresh from the kitchen it should not be providing hospitality at all.

Our room was not in the Hotel, it was in separate building which felt totally apart from the hotel and really was not a good feeling. I think this part of the Hotel was for Travel Zoo Bookings or last minute booking and pushed far away as possible!!!!! Also the room was very very hot, which was really uncomfortable! It was only 23 degrees outside and with very little ventilation and two poor fans, which one was supposed to be aircon unit. God knows what it would be like if it was hotter it would be totally unbearable! I actually upgraded to the Luxury Room, top room available and I felt this was not that Luxury room at all, very disappointed. we had to ask for large towel as only one was issued and our bottle Prosecco part of the deal was not in the room, I had to go back to the Hotel as there is no Phone in the room. Top it off, breakfast was very poor. breakfast is being served from 7-30 to 10-30 we got to breakfast at 10AM and there was very little left over on the cooked side, what was left was lukewarm at best! Even on the fresh fruit virtually nothing left and again what was left was not nice! Attention to detail could have been much much better and had to ask for various things. You could get some food cooked individually which took ages, also by 10-30 they just wanted us out of the dining area. If they had every we wanted and made food in good time we would have probably been finished by 10-30, just felt they were pushing us out....
if I was Travel Zoo I would think twice about using this hotel again for Future promotions. This was my first time I stayed away with my new partner and I wanted everything to be perfect, I can honestly say it did not meet up to expectations. There is so much more I could complain about but I think you have got the message!

Upon arrival, there was no one maning the reception, we had to go and find a member of staff, who didn't know how to book someone in. We had previously booked in for Sunday roast, but this was very expensive at £24 for just 1 course. Plus the roast pots were so hard, I couldn't eat them, the other veg was passable, but the gravy was so peppery, you couldn't taste much else. We then went off to our deluxe room. This was very large, albeit despite lots of windows, not much lighting. The bathroom was large & good shower. The bed was comfy {thank god}. However the room was extremely tired, really needed a fresh paint job. We were supposed to get bottle of prosecco in our room, it wasn't there, so we asked for it later & got that sorted. The room had not been cleaned very well at all, that was very disappointing, there was dust in so many places, it was soon obvious the cleaner had rushed. The shower gel only had half an inch of gel. It simply had not been replaced. We only just had enough for 2 night stay. The breakfast was not particularly hot, and not enough selection. Sad really, as this was supposed to be a special treat for my hubbie and I felt embarrassed. There was some friendly staff, but they do need to retrain, as most of them don't know their job roles, they all seemed to muck in on everything. But this is due to them being so understaffed, which is a shame for both staff and paying customers. There were other issues too, but I think you've got a few listed to think about before suggesting this place to others

Not really! We thought it felt grubby, run on a shoestring budget and very disorganised.
Other Comments
Standard of cleanliness in hotel, not enough staff, generally very disorganised and it also felt grubby.
First room we were shown had a terrible smell from drains, and the toilet was very dirty. So I was given key to a second room which smelled as if dogs had stayed in the room (i.e. not the deluxe room we paid for) and it was still in the process of being cleaned! The third room we were given was the bridal suite and even that felt grubby, with hairs on bathroom floor and on dressing table stool. Tea-tray was very basic with only two tiny pots of UHT milk for two people! Breakfast was very chaotic with one person working so items running out, about 8 tables not cleaned up so meant I had to ask for table to be cleaned so we could sit down. Items such as tea, coffee, milk, hot water, bread, plates, all running out and all customers having to ask for them to be replenished. Told on check-in that our room would not be cleaned as we were only staying two nights. This meant the tea tray was not replenished at all during our stay and we had to ask for toilet rolls on the second day.
We’ve previously been on a lot of deals with Travelzoo and they’ve all been excellent. This is the first time we’ve been very disappointed and so would not return to this hotel.

Room was lovely, in a beautiful old building. Great need, very clean everywhere in the hotel. The en suite needs an extra towel rail and definitely some form of frosted glass or meet curtain. The food offering compared unfavourably with the one from the pub a couple of hundred metres down the road, both in terms of price and quality. Service in the restaurant, for both dinner and breakfast, was a bit below par. Location was very good.

Beautiful old hotel with lovely accommodation and secure parking. The very large garden is an added bonus. Our room was very well appointed and the facilities were excellent. We ate in the restaurant and although it’s not an extensive menu our food was very good. Would definitely stay there again.

We had breakfast included and there was plenty of hot food available in the buffet section with a choice of other hot plates. The only criticism was that the continental breakfast - the content of which looked lovely - was not covered and there were quite a few flies on the cheese, ham and croissants. Other people noticed too and consequently no one ate it. Such a shame.

For a 3* and the price we paid it was very good. The food was nothing to write home about but the Sunday dinner was huge! The staff were very friendly and accommodating and, whilst some were lacking in knowledge they made up for it in enthusiasm and correcting issues. A special mention for Martin in the waiting team and Amy the GSM.

When you report overflowing shower trays (that as a builder you know it hasn't just happened so they obviously haven't acted on previous reports as it was literally flowing out onto the bathroom floor and the raised floorboards showed the signs of an ongoing problem), but worst of all in my eyes is when you report an electrical fault on the one and only bedside lamp which is an easy remedy, no one can be bothered to act is frustrating especially when as an electrical fault it falls into a possible fire risk. Not a problem if the wall switch for the main lights wasn't 6' away from the bed, for convenience it's annoying when you have to bang the plug or wiggle a cable to get the lamp to work. A little thing but still a risk and like I said, a simple fix, despite there being a PAT test sticker on the plug.
On the bright side waiter Terry was a great ambassador for the hotel and we enjoyed our chats.
Plenty of free parking at the hotel, breakfast was okay, freshly cooked on day one, buffet style the following morning. Drinks were fairly expensive £29 for 2 large wine's but I suppose you are in Henley on Thames.
Bed was very comfortable, windows all need adjusting/ new hinges, not sure what it'll be like on a cold day?
Would we return, probably not.

Nice place with a lovely garden, we had a clean and spacious room, the staff were generally pleasant and very helpful.
The full English breakfast is buffet and you have to order eggs other than scrambled, but quite good.
Main meals food was good, although the menu was not quite what I would call expansive.

One big disappointment, I would add, not the hotel's fault.
Travelzoo's description includes the lovely Thameside walk to Marlow, we were very much looking forward to this on the Sunday, it was one of the main reasons for choosing this weekend break.
Sadly it couldn't happen, barely 15 minutes along the riverside path from Hurley, we were greeted with a sign stating: "Temple Bridge is closed. No riverside access to Marlow". The diversion is a far cry from a riverside walk.
It turns out the bridge has been closed indefinitely since May 2023.
Plenty of time for Travelzoo to update the misleading description.

We had a lovely room, with a rolltop bath, comfortable kingsize bed and very spacious. The room was a little bit tired around the edges, particularly in the ensuite, but well decorated with quality furnishings. We had a buffet breakfast the first morning and table service on the second, both very good quality, tasty food. The evening meals were a little expensive and the quality of the food wasn't as good the second night. However, the lunchtime specials were exceptional in terms of quality and very reasonable prices. Altogether a lovely quirky place to stay, watch out for the low doorways and the staff were friendly and helpful.

We have been before after purchasing a great deal via Travelzoo. Unfortuanately this time was not as good. For the amount of guest they didnt have enough staff. I ordered pancakes for breakfast but never got them as the waiter forgot to order them, mind you, he was rushed off his feet. No plates at the cold buffet, and hot buffet was barely warm. There was a wedding, which they clearly knew, so should have put on more staff. Shame because they will lose custom because of this. unsure of our return😌

We checked in on Tuesday 25th March at around 4pm and after quite a long wait at Reception were allocated Room 28. When we checked around the Room we found that the telephone was dead; one of the bedside lamps was'nt working and the toilet pan was leaking at the base. We reported this straightaway and the Duty Manager came to the room to check the problems. He found a standby bedside lamp and provided a bath mat to put in front of the toilet pan and said he would arrange for the maintenance man to check out the problems the following day (Wednesday 26/03). We were out all day and went we checked back into our Room nothing had been fixed and worse still the Room had'nt ben serviced. When we complained at Reception about the Room not having been serviced we were told that we should have been advised when we first checked in of the Hotel policy that unless you ask for the Room to be serviced it will not happen - clearly we were not informed !! Also none of the problem noted by the Duty Manager the previous day had been dealt with.
To compound our great disappointment, on the first night we had booked a meal in the restaurant at 18.30hrs. - we sat at our table for about 30 minutes before anyone took a drinks order or gave us menus to choose from - our first course was served almost 1 hour after we had sat down at our table. To make matters worse, on the second night we booked a meal for 18.00hrs. - the service was much better as well as the food but when we had finished we were asked to settle the bill having expected to do so when we checked out on Thursday morning particularly since we were not asked to settle our meal bill the previous evening !! All in all a very disappointing experience !!
We are seriously considering writing to Best Western Hotels asking what they think about our unfortunate experience staying at The Olde Bell.

Rang the hotel 4 times on different days to book for dinner and ask for check in time-never answered.
Arrived at 3pm , kept waiting for an hour and half before room ready .
Bathroom was freezing , shower head and sink tap were completely gunged up so was horrible to use. Top on shower gel not put on properly.
Booked dinner online for the Friday evening a week before but was kept waiting an hour and a half and had to ask to see the Manager .
An Asian man said he was the manager when he wasn’t and was so rude .
Desert was served cold as the kitchen closed when we were seated . We were told we could eat in the bar on a low table ,which was unacceptable.
Really disappointed as this was our third stay , but the whole hotel was awful .

We were a little disappointed that our room was not in the old building but in a barn conversion across the road. The room was spacious but was not as clean as we expected. The shower surround needed descaling and the bathroom floor was not clean.
Dust on the walls behind the bedside cabinets and no headboard on the bed. There were plug sockets at head level on one side of the bed (would have been hidden by a headboard!)
Staff, although pleasant enough, did not always know what they were doing and some uniforms were not in the best condition - there did not appear to be anyone overseeing staff appearance.
We ate at the restaurant and both our meals were very good, cooked beautifully and a highlight of our stay.

Customer service was lacking. One member of staff was good. Everyone else seemed to lack training.
We decided to eat in the restaurant on the first night. Lots of things were off the menu. I ended up with an egg sandwich and a portion of chips. Cutlery wasn’t clean. We were given a sweet menu covered in chocolate. Our coffee was unceremoniously delivered without saucers or teaspoons.
We couldn’t charge anything to our room and we were automatically charged 12.5% for poor service.
Breakfast next morning was good.
Breakfast the following morning was haphazard. Our table again had dirty cutlery and only one mug. No teaspoons. We waited for ages for someone to come to serve us and had to ask in the end. No milk with coffee and when I asked he brought me a mug to put it in and I went and got some from the buffet station.
The jam dispensers had no bowls to put it in and I had to put my plate under it.
When we came to check out we waited around for a member of staff to give our key to for quite a while there was no one at the reception desk and had to go in search of somebody.

Generally okay. Prior to going we booked a specific room - on arrival we were initially given a different room but then was changed to what we had requested. Not a problem but it could have been. Also no Prosecco in the room and had to ask several times over the two days. Arrived on a Sunday and the evening meal options was very limited having run out of many choices even though the Olde Bell was not that busy. Also, we had to pay for our meal as we went along rather than at the end of our stay, which seemed rather unusual. That said, the meal was good and the breakfast very good. Lastly our room was not cleaned during our two night stay and coffee tea not refreshed. I presume we should have requested it rather than presume it would be done. The staff were friendly and helpful but our overall impression was that with a little more attention to detail the Bell could be so much better. Hopefully our review has not been too critical as we did enjoy our short stay.

Needed to employ someone to clear breakfast tables, replenish plates & orange juices. Our room certainly wasn’t luxury, like stated, although it was okay. Attention to cleaning would be good, also only had 1 towel, so had to ask for another and only 1 toilet roll, even though there was a holder for a spare.

Car parking, very quiet location, large sized rooms. Evening restaurant food was good (but wine overly expensive).
Other Comments
Faulty radiators in bedroom, TV no reception (broken aerial lead), lighting poor, large rooms but not very homely or well equiped. No room service during 3 night stay. Veru disorganised breakfast service (e.g. not enough tables, hit and miss hot food selection, poor cold food selection). Bar gloomy and no ambiance. Village very quiet, not much to do or see. No information pack in room.

Had our wedding reception here 30 years ago, so had a good idea what it was like. Still a lovely, historic hotel with good food and good staff. Cosy bar and lounge area. We thoroughly enjoyed our night here.

Room preparation not marvellous, daily refreshment should be the default, not an option.
Breakfast good. Grapefruit would be a nice option

I was expecting to stay in an ‘Olde Worlde’ pub, not a modern complex. Totally out of character for its situation. The view from our windows straight onto a row of cars was not good.

Gorgeous location but the place was not very busy. The breakfast was rather sketchy, no bacon, not much of a choice and only tea and coffee in thermos flasks was a bit of a shock. Otherwise, great location, perfect in a sunnier time of the year!

The location was good and the staff were generally friendly.
Other Comments
The staff although friendly were not very knowledgeable about the menus or the wine list.
The breakfast on the first day was a buffet that was cold and not at all appetizing.
I had a glass that was dirty (looked like a small mould patch on the rim) This was changed but the waiter did not apologise!
The room was very tired looking with a big stain on the carpet and on the last evening the toilet was leaking on to the bathroom floor.

Breakfast ... No greeting. No explanation or shown display of food.
We had to ask for plates, and also no marmalade or jams etc on display, which we had to ask for.
Jugs for hot water /coffee/tea not clearly written for a good sighted person to read on each jug.
My husband poorly sighted could not decipher the difference between each jug.
Juices had no labeling .
The food for breakfast, did not look appetizing. we were not offered alternative eggs, without asking.
This was disappointing, as the meal the evening before was very good.
No offer of help with luggage.
The room we chose , it was not explained that the steps could be difficult , to the next floor or within the room or any warning to take care.
We realised this is 11th century inn, and the style was as expected , but thought we would have been warned of safety issues.

The Olde Bell is a beautiful hotel near to Hurley lock. We booked through Travelzoo. The hotel is steeped in history parts of the walls were originally built by Monks about 1150. We had a lovely 1st floor room with super king bed & large ensuite We ate our evening meal there. The food was very tasty unfortunately the service from staff was very slow, I did comment to a couple of the staff about this. Best Western manage the hotel & have done for about a year. The hotel is owned by a couple of billionaire brothers.

I paid extra for a luxury room. Described as large with roll top bath in room. We were given room 6. It had a shower room with roll top bath. A small alcove had a set of drawers and a row of pegs with coat hangers. The small bedroom was up a flight of narrow stairs. This was not how I expected a luxury room to be. I explained this to reception and we were moved to room 8 which was perfect.
Food in the restaurant was very good and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Great location to visit Windsor and Henley on Thames. Hotel in a quiet pretty village. Excellent breakfast and food eaten at the hotel. Only negative was due to the hotel having a busy weekend some of the items offered on the menu were unavailable both for dinner and breakfast.

We had a deluxe room which was large and nicely furnished. Nice and warm. Bed a little uncomfortable but that could be down to personal preference of mattress. One or two maintenance issues required which were highlighted to reception. Notes were taken for Maintenance man to fix.
All in all we enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Our only criticism of this hotel was the overpowering smell of cooking in all the areas of the hotel especially in our room( no. 4, ) which was above the kitchen. Whilst we appreciate that this is a very old hotel, we do feel that better
extraction facilities could be installed as this really made our stay unpleasant.
