Why We Love This Hotel
- Stratton House Hotel dates from the 17th century. The building is part Jacobean and part Georgian, and is surrounded by a walled garden
- The hotel is in the village of Stratton, five minutes' drive from the historic market town of Cirencester, with its Roman amphitheatre, impressive parish church, and quaint tearooms

Cotswold Water Park is 20 minutes' drive away and is home to 180 lakes set over 40 square miles, with windsurfing, archery, sailing, and kayaking on offer. Room 17 very nice. Well decorated and warm. Bed a bit firm, for my liking, but fairly comfortable. Shower room very nice. Lacked a full length dressing mirror and some coat hooks in the lobby. Also only 4 hangers in the wardrobe, but could easily be remedied. TV and remote did not work at first but this was swiftly put right by friendly staff.

Very enjoyable stay. Friendly, helpful staff. High standard dining and wonderful breakfasts - exceptionally good sausages and bacon.
The outstanding highlight for us was the spa where my wife had a 50min treatment and I had 50min full body massage, both sensibly booked in advance. Both of us totally enjoyed our session - for me one of the best massages I’ve had. Not to be missed.

I booked the Stratton Hotel for a mini break with a friend for my birthday in early January. Overall we had a lovely time. We enjoyed the food, spa and local amenities. The staff at the Stratton were also professional and welcoming. Would definitely revisit when the weather is warmer and drier to explore more of the area.

We had a really nice break. The breakfast was great and we also had dinner both nights which also was very good.

The room we had wouldn’t get a prize on “three in a bed”
It needs a deep clean. Dusty skirting boards and lights, toothpaste marks left on the wooden rack in the bathroom and the bathroom tiles need a good bleach product to remove the black mildew in the grout!! All cleanable but obviously cleaning lacks attention to detail.
The room get heavy condensation due to old windows which we understand but due to the windows all being left open after cleaning it was very cold in the room on our return?

Breakfast was super, restaurant choices not so good. Rooms spacious but noisy I think with powered foul waste. Single glazed metal windows so lots of internal condensation but room warm enough. £20 per night extra for our dog seemed a little excessive.

We stayed at Stratton House for three nights as a Pre-Christmas treat and to undertake some Christmas shopping in lovely Cirencester. The hotel is well placed within a few short minutes' drive of the town car parks. We opted for a Deluxe room which was very airy, roomy and comfortable. The breakfast choices were excellent and hearty in size. We dined in the hotel's restaurant one evening and were pleasantly surprised by the menu choices and quality of the presentation.

We enjoyed our stay and the room we were given was nice and bigger than expected. The breakfast was excellent and staff friendly. However on the second day the radiator in our room would not switch on and although a little chilly we put up with it as we were going out to eat anyway. The next morning l got in the shower to find out the water was cold. On telephoning reception we were informed that due to a gas leak there was no heating or hot water throughout the hotel. Now l know this can’t be helped but l do think guests should have been informed earlier either by telephoning each room or by placing a note under the doors letting everyone know the situation. Breakfast on the second morning was very chaotic obviously due to the lack of gas but that was no excuse for guests having to keep asking for items to be replenished ie bowls, bread, butter and milk and having to hang around waiting for this to be done.

We left the hotel after 3 hours as there was no heating and no hot water. The reception were very understanding of the reason we were leaving. Public rooms were cold and although we were given an electric heater for our room without any hot water we could not shower or wash.

On arrival the staff were very polite and nice although they said we were very very early checking in.We thought it was a strange comment considering it was 1.45pm and on our confirmation it stated check in 2pm.The gentleman then said that the information was wrong but had not been changed?
However we had some lunch there in the bar and checked in around 2.50pm.
The room was no 14 at the top of 46 stairs which could have been a problem to some.
The room had 3 windows,two looking over the car park,the other a smashing view looking over the walled garden and the beautiful Cotswold country side.
The bed was a super king and smashing too.
The toilet,bathroom/shower was a great size with hand basin and toilet too.
Tv was provided and two lovely arm chairs.All in all the room was great.
The hotel had a nice bar,a very nice sitting room with chesterfields and arm chairs and was decorated very nice.
We only ate breakfast and this was very nice with lots of choice.
All in all the staff were excellent and we would love to go again.

I did ring hotel before my arrival to check that our room didn't have many stairs to go up due th my balance, unfortunately we were put on the top floor and a room that had stairs down as well, it was not safe for me but the room was very good once I climbed all the stairs

Really lovely hotel, lovely grounds, great food and staff. We had room 16 (signature room booked via Travelzoo) which was very nice indeed. Huge bed, comfortable, large bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower. Plus loads of power sockets!!

The spa, is not what I would call an all-encompassing spa. There is a steam room, sauna, and 2 'experience showers' in one area. Then there is a spa pool, which I reckon at a push you could get 4 people in without touching each other (just). No pool, and some seating for those who are not in any of the other parts. There of course are massage etc. facilities that I suppose is the main reason for the spa itself. In addition even if you are a guest at the hotel, you still have to pay to enter the spa, £15 an hour each for 1 hour or £25 for 3 hours. I honestly don't know what anyone would do for 3 hours here. Even if you had a 1 hour treatment, you would spend most of the rest of the time lounging on a bench.
Seems a really strange moan, but it did effect our stay. Room 16 was on the top floor, so was nice a quiet and away from the hustle and bustle. This was great, but we noticed on the first night a kind of banging/thudding noise through the walls. We assumed initially it was someone having a good time, but after a good few hours we decided no one had that much stamina :-). Turns out that the swing door on the bottom floor (where the waiting staff enter and exit the kitchen), somehow shakes the walls each time is swings open and closed. Now when there is no service, this is fine, but bearing in mind that breakfast starts early, then lunch, then dinner - it goes on for most of the day. Its one of those noises that once you hear it you cannot unhear it. I woke up around 5:30 on Saturday morning, and could only hear this thud every few seconds - it doesn't stop. If someone goes through the door with a little more ferocity, it actually shakes the wardrobe and bathroom doors, to the point it even woke me up at one stage. I don't know what the answer is, but this really had an effect on our nights sleep. We ordered breakfast for 10am on both days so we could have a nice relaxing lie in. On both mornings we were wide awake by 7 due this constant noise. If it hadn't been for that - I would have given 4-5 stars. But it really had an impact and I came away feeling more tired than when I arrived.

We stayed for two nights in room 24. Excellent spacious room with lovely bathroom ( with a bath ).
We had breakfast and dinner and the food and service was excellent.
Visitors need to be aware that a 10% service charge is automatically added to your bill.

Unfortunately, on the second day the hotel had a problem with the gas ( boiler ? ) So there was no heating throughout the hotel and no hot water. Also the dinner menu on the second night had to be reduced to food which did not involve gas cooking.
We were not offered any recompense at all...even a glass of wine would have been a nice gesture.

Fab hotel& location and it’s the 4th time at the hotel. Probably the best breakfast at any hotel we’ve stayed at. However the evening menu is virtually the same with very little variation. My sirloin steak £24.95 was very poor and had large amount of surrounding fat and was not cooked as medium but was medium rare. I pointed out the excess fat to waiter ( Freddie). I should have returned the steak but it was our Golden Anniversary and I didn’t want to eat my meal later than my wife. Her linguini was delicious. We booked the hotel through as usual with Travelzoo but deal ended on 31/3/22 any hotel management would extend the deal an extra day so we had to pay full amount for our anniversary date 1/4/22 ( £160 ) which was not pleasant considering the amount of friends we have recommended plus the fact we paid or the best room no. 14 which was freezing after 9am and the heating switched back on at 5pm. I complained to receptionist twice. Also that room the window overlooking the car park had huge gaps in with the wind blowing through. As for the shower you had to be a member of Mensa to operate it! We love the hotel but for the first time it didn’t reach the high standards of the cost we paid I previously submitted glowing reviews but was a little disappointed this time particularly as it was our Golden.anniversary. We will return with the Travelzoo deal but not pay the extra go the super delux room. Can’t fault the staff especially Lucy.

Very enjoyable stay. Our 2nd time at the hotel and grateful to be able to bring our small dogs to enjoy the fantastic local walking. We chose an upgraded room for more space and ground floor access. Helpful staff, beautiful food - a very pleasant stay !

General cleanliness our room was dusty also dogs are allowed in the hotel and this did not help with all allergies and parts of the hotels just needed a thorough cleaning. The food was average but nothing more wouldn’t choose to eat there again

Lovely hotel within easy reach of Cirencester. Great walks from the hotel. We had a few minor issues but they were quickly dealt with. Would advise to book a table for the evening in advance as we couldn't get the time slot we would have wished for. Car park was very full & sometimes hard to get a spot.

My wife and I stayed at the Stratton House Hotel for are anniversary. The place was nice, the staff were brilliant and the food was great. It approx 1.1 kilometres to the centre of Cirencester. Nice little walk to there plenty of pubs and bars and places to eat. The little bar inside the hotel was a great little snug.

It’s a nice hotel, our room was exactly what I booked. Hotel was clean & warm & the Staff were good & friendly. Easy access to Cirencester. The only reason we wouldn’t return is the breakfast was cold & a bit sparse on all 3 mornings, burnt sourdough bread & cold poached eggs etc we think lack of staff on breakfast duty may have been the problem.

This was the second time we had stayed at Stratton House. Rooms are lovely, nice ambience, friendly staff and we like the location. The only negative we experienced this time was at breakfast. We were at 9.15am and the buffet table was devestated no fresh fruit both mornings. We asked politely for the fruit to be replenished, but by the time they did this they insisted on serving our cooked breakfast, so we had to go without. Bread for the toaster had also run out and the table looked a mess. I think more attention should be paid to the replenishment. Also we came before in the beginning of December and the evening menu was exactly the same this time . I think a little variation for guest returning would be nice. Having said all this the cooked breakfast was very good.

We were very lucky to have sunshine and spring warmth. I have an arthritic hip and so can no longer walk far but was able to sit in the sun most of the day with my newspaper while my wife walked down into Cirencester. We were provided with complimentary iced water by the waitress who, like all the staff, was friendly and helpful.

The noise of a generator outside our room caused us to be awake all night we packed our bags at six o’clock ready to leave . We were given a full refund but that did not make up for the dissapolntment of not having the Mothering Sunday gift we had looked forward too . Because of this we were unable to enjoy any thing the hotel had to offer .

This was our 3rd visit as we love the hotel and the staff now recognise us and will have a brief chat. We update to a superior deluxe room and have stayed in the same room twice. It really is wonderful. Unfortunately this time we had a room further down the corridor. The door from the dinning room to the kitchen was constantly banging it was so annoying that i felt i could not relax in the room. It was reported and the issue has been raised before. I do hope they fix the problem as we really love this place but would not want to stay in that room again. Thank you as normally it is 100% perfect,

When booking I didn't see anywhere to say even though it's a spa hotel it didn't have a pool and I was expected to pay £15 per person per hour to use the jacuzzi. Also, I stated we are both vegans on booking and when checking in, at breakfast we were told they don't cater for vegans and we would have to pick bits from the veggie breakfast. Bed very uncomfortable, needs a new mattress. Staff unfriendly and miserable, we didn't see a single staff member smile. We booked for 3 nights but checked out after just one night. I've never felt the need to check out of a hotel early and forfeit my payment. This was booked and prepaid for my 60th birthday so a very disappointing experience.

Lovely, relaxed experience at Stratton House Hotel. The breakfast in the mornings were very good and we enjoyed a couple of hot chocolates in the bar on Saturday afternoon too. My wife had a massage at the spa and said that had been excellent too. All in all - a great experience.

Enjoyable experience other than a couple of things: Disappointed to be told that over the two days we were there, that the room would not be serviced. No change of towels or cleaning of room. Not the reason that i went for a Superior room. Only lager and cider on draught.....why....only bottles available for other beers and cans for Guinness. Not what I would expect from a popular bar. I understand that you want the builders to finish work as soon as possible but on a Saturday morning to be woken by drills and banging at 8am. Fortunately the work was halted on Sunday. Were we told about work continuing over weekend...NO.

Smell from cooking particularly garlick filled the room.The staff changed our room after the first night.
Standard of evening meal was terrible,I sent the turkey pie meat back because it was too tough to eat.The response I got from the waitress was condescending I quote ( turkey meat is always tough in a pie)This was a shame because all the other staff were really nice just this older lady.My wife had butterfly chicken and it had one garlick mushroom on the plate that should not have been there.
Rooms not cleaned during stay due to covid! however there should be a try provided with clean crockery and tea etc and a facilty to empty bins,the one thing that really annoyed me was the £20 per night for the dog ,since you did not clean the room until we left this should be charged once only,its far more than other hotels charge anyway.When challenged the staff did not want to know.
We had to negotiate a staircase with wet paint to get to our room.

We were extremely comfortable and happy with our stay: the only suggestion that I would like to offer is that our bathroom, while beautifully furnished and equipped had no shelf anywhere near the sink and overhead wonderfully illuminated mirror. This made applying make up and hair styling quite tricky!

We stayed 3 nights BED and breakfast but had an evening meal there twice as well. Food was lovely. Beautiful setting. The 1st room we were given had a broken bed - not sure how someone could make it up & not noticed? However we were upgraded straight away to a bigger room. Heating was a bit hit & miss being switched on. Staff were all lovely & in particular Sophie who was a very hard working friendly polite girl who made us very welcome. On her day off service was definitely much slower however I suspect this was also down to staff shortages which alot are struggling with right now. Perfect base to visit different areas of the Cotswolds. Loved it.

The food was very good. Unfortunately was very cold in the lounge area which we would have spent more time in . The beds were very comfortable but the pillows let them down . All in all a lovely break away .

Beautiful room, tasteful decoration. Comfy large bed. Bathroom roomy. Plenty of hot running water with good water pressure which can be lacking in some places. Hotel appears to be under some refurbishment in some areas but did not impact on stay. Dinner menu delicious. Excellent choice at breakfast. Had Spa facilities but didn’t try. Staff are very helpful and attentive. Cream tea scones were scrumptious. Very local for visiting Cirencester and other tourist attractions Highly recommend.

The hotel is looking a little tired in places but very clean. Staff are exceptionally friendly and accommodating and make you feel very welcome.
Only downside for us was we were in a room above their function room and on both nights there was a Christmas Party going on. Thankfully we did not retire to our room until late and the music from the functions finished at exactly 12 midnight. So did not really upset us too much. I could not understand why these rooms were giving out to the party goers, other than that we really enjoyed our stay.

Our room was large, clean, warm and welcoming. Very comfortable bed. Very powerful water pressure when running a bath - so the only disappointment was the trickle of a shower (hubby says it was due to the shower head fitment). Breakfasts were tasty and good portions. We had one evening meal there, very nice (we stayed 3 nights and the menu never altered). We used the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi and it was a lovely relaxing experience. overlooking the gardens - work had begun to make an outdoor bar/eating area which we imagine will be great when finished and in good weather. The staff were friendly and helpful. The building itself had an historic look and feel but felt like it had been recently refurbished inside as it was clean and smart (some painting work was ongoing during our stay). Overall a 9/10 due to the poor shower and the lack of an 'atmosphere' in the communal areas, and the fact that it was a bit too far away from Cirencester town centre to be a comfortable walk - great pub next door though!

Mostly happy,but third floor room with no lift at 79 years old is really a challange too far, Also being told on arrival that our room would not be serviced during our stay, which may have only been for two nights but was still unexpected and not good.

it was a nice place, our standard room was o.k except for a continous nois24hrs a day, room 2. bathroom very nice. travelzoo said a full breakfast and afternoon cream scone included in price, for jan/feb but the cream scone you only get once. the 2 nearest pubs were closed for the 4 days we were there.

it was a bit expensive for us. a burger and chips £15 and a pint of bitter £4.75.

Beautiful hotel and garden (even in January!) , food and staff were both really good.... upgrading to the top level of room (Superior Deluxe) was so worth the bit extra! Felt like honeymooners! Really nice stay in a part of the UK we'd not really explored before - and Cirencester is a fabulous town to mooch around (spent far too much!).

Some building work going on was a little disruptive but not to the point of spoiling our experience and we took a pragmatic approach to it - gotta be done some time!

Spent two lovely days at Stratton house hotel, although hotel was having some upgrading work, disruption was kept to a minimum. All staff were very professional & friendly in their work & we were made to feel very welcome, we ate in the restaurant on the Saturday night & food was to a good standard. Would definitely stay here again.

We reserved a room in the main house and it was large, beautifully furnished, quiet and very comfortable (huge bed was wonderful). It was rather cold on arrival as all the radiators were off (in January!), but soon warmed up. Largest ensuite bathroom we've ever had anywhere I think. The hotel is in the throes of renovation with some disruption, but this did not affect our stay. We had one bad experience with dinner in the dining room, due to lack of kitchen staff on a busy Saturday night, but Sunday lunch was excellent and the breakfasts were more than adequate.

As elsewhere at this time, this hotel is suffering from staff absences, however those we encountered were friendly and helpful and doing their best.

We were so pleased with our stay here.Check in was easy,our room was lovely and the staff really friendly and helpful.We had lovely meals ,all well cooked and with lots of choice and using locally sourced ingredients.Gorgeous sitting rooms and wonderful scones with the cream tea!Wouldn’t hesitate to return.

We had a wonderful stay here. Only negative comment is that our booking information said check in was 2pm and when we arrived it had changed to 3pm. Had we known this in advance we could have made other arrangements for our arrival or gone into town first. Reception staff could have offered complimentary drinks while we waited as this was not our mistake.

Stayed 3 nights B&B on a package deal which we upgraded at the hotel for a reasonable additional cost. This gave us a 'feature' room which was a pleasant suite with sitting area, small dressing/wardrobe area and excellent en suite. Drawback was that we had 6 flights of stairs to get there (no lift) but, to be fair, we were offered porterage for our luggage.

We received a telephone call prior to our stay to tell us there would be a function on the last evening of our stay which may result in some noise. This did not concern us and we did not experience any inconvenience. The Full English Breakfast was smaller than most similar hostelries but was adequate and well cooked. The hotel's ground floor public rooms were smart and comfortable.

The hotel is currently undergoing a fairly major re-fit, which we had not been made aware of when we booked through TravelZoo, who also failed to warn us that we needed to book our first morning breakfast ahead of time - which meant an 8.15 breakfast call on our first (Sunday) morning. Not a great start! And we had to exit the building to get to our room!
However, the room was well-sized and comfortable although Covid precautions meant it remained unserviced for the duration of our three-night stay. Our last evening found the carpets being replaced in the hallway! Renovations, everywhere!
Dinner - when we got into the restaurant - was actually very well done and they, obviously occasionally, employ a very talented chef. On the first night I was offered a fabulous game pie but we were fortunate to be able to reserve another for our last evening as the chef wasn't on the next night and no other "pie of the day" had been prepared.
Overall, and under the circumstances, a pleasant break - but we'll have to remember our swimming things to take advantage of the spa the next time!

A stress free visit with no complaints. The room upgrade was very welcome. Lovely hotel and breakfast was very nice indeed. We never felt rushed even though we were last down on the 2 days we stayed. All staff wore masks and the room was very clean on arrival. I left our negative lateral flow tests out in the room so the cleaner could see that we didn’t have covid. It’s a difficult job in these times and a bit of security for them can only be welcome.

Customer service was excellent as was the food. Just some small negatives. Room was very warm, especially in the ensuite where we could not work out how to control the towel rail but to be fair the hotel would have resolved if we had asked. Secondly, the space for the WC was a bit tight and those with a bigger build would have had issues. This could have been resolved by moving the sink over 6 inches or so.

Nice stay with a few irritations. Couldn't get the TV to work, rectified when supplied with a different contoller. Given choice of 'special ' starters, choose one then told sold out - a bit more communication between kitchen and staff needed. Ordered cider off menu then told sold out! One of the Irish coffees arrived with the cream sunk to bottom and not warm. Other coffee not warm enough but they were replaced when requested

Nice hotel, well priced, have stayed before, this time booked as a special offer via TRAVELZOO in a standard room, previously stayed in a "superior" "comfy room" in the newer built extension, this time it was a standard room, room 4 in the main house.
Room was O.K, BUT smelt a bit musty/ damp, clean enough except for oil/mud marks engrained into bedroom carpet by guests over time.
Bathroom also dated as was room really, in need of some tlc, didn't expect a palace on standard rate but room and corridor to same could do with some investment, upgrade and new wallpaper/ paint/ carpets etc.
Room was clean just "old", if staying again would consider seeking either another room (if we just got a really tired one), or enquire about additional cost to upgrade.
Staff were fine though, especially breakfast service staff, all super polite, quick and cheerful.

The Stratton is an excellent hotel with great location and a variety of services available such as the Spa, which we used twice in two days!

The staff were very helpful, courteous and polite. We found particularly helpful staff were, Lucy, Lizzie, Melissa, Jackie (at the bar) James, in reception, Andy in the restaurant, and the guy who does the maintenance, (I didn't get his name,) The menu was varied and reasonable. Overall a great few days in the Cotswolds so thanks to the Stratton we will be back.

The Hotel looks a bit " Tired" When I got to the Room 27 the Carpet had not been cleaned the carpet was Coggles up in places & old , needed replacing too which the Op's Manager said they are replacing them. But I did not benefit from this !

The hotel must have a great kitchen team. Although not a vegetarian I would certainly return for the vegetable wellington and the mushroom linguini. Breakfasts delicious too!
