Why We Love It

  • This converted Georgian mill is set in 14 acres of Somerset countryside
  • Ideal for walkers, the hotel is near Blackdown Hills AONB and Bincombe Beeches Nature Reserve
  • West Bay beach, the setting for the TV series "Broadchurch", is 35 minutes' drive away

Haselbury Mill is a cosy country hotel in rural Somerset. The converted Georgian mill and surrounding stone cottages overlook a lake, and are in 14 acres of landscaped grounds.

The property is close to the Dorset border and is 10 minutes' drive from Crewkerne, a pretty market town that dates back to Saxon times. The area is popular with walkers -- Bincombe Beeches Nature Reserve is a short drive away and the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a little under half an hour from the hotel. It is a 35-minute drive from Glastonbury, Lyme Regis and West Bay beach, where the TV series "Broadchurch" is filmed. The market town of Yeovil is 20 minutes away by car.

The hotel's Lakeside Restaurant serves seasonal food from local suppliers. The bar is open to visitors, and boasts flagstone floors and oak-panelled walls. Homemade pizzas and pies are available here from 6pm on Friday and Saturday.

There are 21 individually decorated bedrooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard Rooms are in the main house and have showers rather than baths. The larger Classic Rooms are split between the main house and the Lakeside building. Top-of-the-range Superior Rooms are in the coach house, and are larger still and more modern in style.

The staff were particularly helpful and friendly. The 'superior' room we were given (in the coach house) was disappointing. It was small with a locked interconnecting door through which we could clearly hear the guests in the next room talking. After complaining we were re allocated a far superior room in the main house. The food was very good. The atmosphere and facilities were a strange mix of recently improved décor and odd 'waiting to be done' corners.
