Hotel details
W Budapest opened last summer in the UNESCO-listed Drechsler Palace, which dates back to 1866 and was previously the home of the Hungarian Ballet Institute. The hotel is on the famous tree-lined Andrassy Avenue, which has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its spectacular Neo-renaissance mansions and townhouses. Budapest's top sights are in walking distance, or you can hop on the metro from the station across the street.
Condé Nast Traveller calls the hotel "a sleek space" that's "a design-lovers dream". It blends original Neo-renaissance features such as huge arched doorways and stain-glassed windows with modern furnishings in forest greens, dusty pinks, and rich blues.
The hotel restaurant, Nightingale by Beef Bar, offers an Asian-inspired menu, with a mix of meaty, vegetarian, and fish dishes: think beef nigiri with truffle butter, lighter-than-air bao buns, and a tangy wakame salad. After dinner, you can slip into the speakeasy bar accessed through a bathroom mirror. It has a cocktail menu inspired by influential figures from Budapest's history, and the bartenders are happy to come up with bespoke concoctions designed to your taste.
You'll also get access to the hotel spa during your stay. Inspired by Houdini's illusions, it's comprised of a hall of mirrors, with a beautiful relaxation space and a tiled swimming pool (access to the spa area is free, but treatments are chargeable).
Wonderful Rooms are decked out in chic blue-and-gold design. Sustainability is a big consideration at the hotel—all electricity is obtained from renewable sources, all the bathroom amenities are zero carbon with refillable products, and drinking water is supplied in glass bottles rather than plastic.
