Why We Love This Deal

This 12-night escorted tour includes all of Vietnam's classic sights, as well as the places most Western tourists miss. Standouts include Pu Luong, a mountainous region barely touched by commercialisation. And Ninh Binh, which looks just like Halong Bay on land. You'll travel in September, when the rice terraces turn harvest-gold.

Itinerary
First, spend two nights in Hanoi. It's a feast for the senses, with temples, street food, and motorbikes at every turn. On the second day, you'll tour Nom Ancient Village, a centuries-old rural settlement around 25 miles from Hanoi. It is complete with ancient brick houses, a stone bridge, and a pagoda with over 100 statues.

Next, transfer to Pu Luong Nature Reserve, around four hours from Hanoi. Spend a full day hiking the mountains, rice terraces, and jungles that few Western tourists ever see. Bamboo water wheels are distinct to the region, and you'll see them all along the riverfront.

Ninh Binh is next. Its stunning karst limestone formations have given it the nickname of "Halong Bay on land". Immerse yourself in the scenery on a 2-hour boat trip, and enjoy a relaxed cycle through the village. You'll also visit Tho Ha, a traditional craft village. A highlight is a cookery class with a local family.

Next, you'll return to the coast for an overnight Halong Bay cruise. Sail off into the sunset and discover the quieter areas that daytrippers miss. This is your time to slow down, try tai chi on the deck, or read in your private cabin. All the regular activities are included, like kayaking, beach visits, and swim stops.

Then fly south to Hoi An, Vietnam's Imperial Capital, to spend three nights exploring at your own pace. We recommend a bamboo basket boat ride in the nearby water village. Hoi An is especially pretty at night, strewn with red lanterns.

Finally, continue to Ho Chi Minh City, where you'll have more free time to explore. You could learn all about the war at the Cu Chi Tunnels and War Remnants Museum. Or, take in the modern city and browse for souvenirs at the night markets.
