Itinerary
Begin with two nights at the Center Hotels Skjaldbreid, Reykjavik. It's on Laugavegur, the city's main shopping street, and under 10 minutes' walk from the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church. One evening, you'll set out on a coach tour hunting the Northern Lights. Sightings aren't guaranteed, but clear winter skies create ideal conditions.
Next, fly across the Atlantic to Toronto Airport. You'll need to make your own way to Niagara Falls—there are plenty of direct buses and trains, both taking around 90 minutes. The Sheraton Fallsview Hotel is right next to the Falls. You'll get a boat ride for the best views.
Finally, take the Amtrak Maple Leaf train to New York. The journey takes around 10 hours, including the border crossing. The train skirts the Hudson River before arriving at New York's Penn Station. The Hotel Edison is an Art Deco hotel dating from the 1930s, five minutes' walk from Times Square. A tour of Ellis Island is included, and you'll sail past the Statue of Liberty to get there.
