Itinerary highlights
- Amman… take a tour of the capital of Jordan, visiting the citadel and the Roman Theatre, as well as historic nearby Jerash, and the 12th-century Ajloun Castle.
- Dead Sea… head east to see the stunning desert castles that are dotted around Jordan's central hills, en route to the Dead Sea, where you can float in hypersaline waters.
- King's Highway… journey to Petra, with stops at Madaba, home to an ancient and intricate mosaic of the Holy Land; Mount Nebo, said to be from where Moses first saw the Promised Land; and Shobak Castle, a Crusader castle that dates from the 1100s.
- Petra… this ancient city carved into the sandstone is "one of the world's most compelling historical sites, up there with the Taj Mahal and the Pyramids for romance and visual drama" (The Independent). The next day, you'll visit the lesser-known Little Petra, that's reached via a narrow gorge.
- Wadi Rum… known as the Valley of the Moon because of its otherworldly desert landscape that served as a backdrop in Star Wars, you'll spend a night there and take a 4x4 ride through the sand dunes.
