Itinerary highlights
Spend a night in port, then sail to Les Andelys, a pretty riverfront village in Normandy. From here, you can take a short hike or coach up to King Richard's Château Gailland. If that doesn't appeal, take a gentle bike tour around Les Andelys instead.
Next, arrive in Le Havre, where you'll spend two days in port. From here, you could take a daytrip to Honfleur, a higgledy-piggledy harbour town rich in Impressionist history. The following day, visit Normandy's D-day landing beaches or take a full-day tour through the idyllic Pays d'Auge farmland.
You'll soon arrive in Rouen, Normandy's Medieval capital. This romantic half-timbered city was the home of St Joan of Arc. Walk or cycle around the city, or set out on a dedicated gourmet tour. Local cuisine is defined by the four Cs: Camembert, cream, cider, and Calvados (apple brandy).
Vernon is next—the gateway to Monet's house and gardens in Giverny. Tour the house and its famous water lily ponds, or head to Chateau de Bizy. This 18th-century castle was inspired by Versailles and is complete with turrets and a drawbridge.
Finally, return to Paris for a full day and night in port. You could go on a guided art walk at Van Gogh's home in Auvers-sur-Oise. Or, visit the private residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and his first wife, Empress Joséphine. Alternatively, finish your trip with a Bateaux Parisiens cruise past the Eiffel Tower.
Ship details
AmaLyra and AmaDolce are sister ships from the 5-star river cruise line AmaWaterways. Dining is a real highlight—AmaWaterways is the only river cruise line that's part of French culinary association Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. Wine, beer, and soft drinks are included at mealtimes.
The lounge has panoramic windows so you can really feel how views change mile by mile. By day, relax on a sunlounger on the top deck or dip in the whirlpool. In the evenings, relax in the bar with a live pianist and performances from local artists. The ship has a fleet of bicycles for those who wish to cycle in port.
