Itinerary

  • Lyon... stay overnight in port, then tour the city the next day. You'll see the winding traboules, the alleyways that silk merchants once used to transport their goods. There are Roman ruins scattered throughout the city. In the afternoon, cruise the Saône into one of the world's most renowned wine regions.
  • Beaune... berth in Chalon, the gateway to Burgundy. In the morning, tour some of the small villages famous for their long viticultural history. Next, head to Beaune, the country's wine capital. A tour of the Hospices de Beaune, or Hôtel-Dieu, is included. This high Gothic hospital holds an annual wine auction each November.
  • Vienne and Tain l'Hermitage... awaken in Vienne, a beautiful Roman river town. The Mont Pipet hill has amazing views of the country. Back on the ship, cruise the most picturesque section of the Rhône, with forested hills either side. Finally, moor in Tain l'Hermitage, where Syrah is produced.
  • Ardèche Gorges... cruise downstream and watch the scenery become gradually more Mediterranean. Sail through the gorge, where limestone cliffs plunge almost 1000 feet. It all culminates with a huge natural stone arch. In the afternoon, you could choose to either visit a lavender farm or trek to Grotte de la Madeleine, a cave with prehistoric art.
  • Arles and Pont du Gard... head into the heart of Provence. In the morning, you can choose between two themed tours of Arles. The first focuses on its Roman heritage, the second on the life of Van Gogh. After lunch, visit the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct.
  • Avignon... finish up in the walled city and tour its most significant building, the turreted Pope's Palace. Afterwards, enjoy a free day to explore. Pick up some last-minute souvenirs, or just watch the world go by in a Provençal square.
