Itinerary highlights
Your cruise departs from and returns to Oban, calling at:
- Isle of Islay, Scotland… a sea loch meets mudflats and heather moorlands at Loch Gruinart Nature Reserve. May is peak time for birdwatching, when the elusive corn crake's distinctive call fills the air. Sights of wading birds like snipes, redshanks, and lapwings are also common
- Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland… the West Light Seabird Centre is home to a large colony of puffins, kittiwakes, and razorbills. In late spring, grey and harbour seals are often spotted on these shores
- Bangor, Northern Ireland… garden lovers will appreciate a visit to Mount Stewart, the former home of the Marquess of Londonderry. Admire the art collection in the house, and the colourful bloom around the grounds
- Peel, Isle of Man… get some fresh air on an easy coastal walk along limestone and rock formations. Then, visit Castle Rushen, and the Old House of Keys on a tour in the island capital
- Belfast, Northern Ireland… wildflower-strewn meadows and woodland trails await at the Oxford Island Nature Reserve. Alternatively, you can visit Titanic Belfast in town
- Tayvallich… is a charming fishing village along Loch Sween, in unspoilt Argyll. Take a calming forest walk, then sail along Slate Islands and the Sound of Luing strait. You might spot harbour porpoises, otters, or white-tailed eagles on the way back to Oban
Ship details
Hebridean Princess is a "stately" ship, says The Daily Telegraph that gives "11/10 for service". Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sailed on her, twice. The late British monarch chartered the vessel in 2006 for a cruise to celebrate her 80th birthday, and again four years later.
Have a wee dram in the Skye Bar on the top deck as you take in stunning views of the passing scenery. Or, sip bottomless champagne at the inviting Tiree Lounge. It has panoramic windows and a real brick fireplace. The restaurant offers a fine-dining experience with an emphasis on using the freshest ingredients. Daily afternoon tea is also included.
Cabins are decorated with tasteful tartan, and they have tea-and coffee-making facilities. The crew is happy to serve shortbread or pop open a bottle of burgundy in your room. You'll also get a decanter of bedside whisky, which you can swap for any tipple of your choice. Wi-Fi is included.
Life on the ship follows an unhurried, convivial rhythm. You'll get shore excursions with expert guides. The tours on this itinerary sometimes utilise the ship's tenders. Onboard events feature live music with Scottish and Gaelic songs. The Captain's Farewell Gala brings on a ceremonial "Address to a Haggis" and bagpipers playing their instruments.
