Cruise itinerary highlights**
Start with a day exploring Reykjavík before embarking National Geographic Explorer. Join the expedition staff and look out for whales. Journey through the remote eastern side of the Westfjords, an area difficult to access, then visit the tiny town of Djúpavík, known for its production of herring. 

On day three, visit Skagafjörður, the gateway to the north of Iceland. It's known for its glacial rivers, horse breeding, and saga history. Choose between a float trip on the Jökulsá River, or visit a historic rural turf farm to learn about the native Icelandic horses. Hear the legends of Grettir the Strong, explore Drangey Island, and spot kittwakes, shearwaters, and perhaps ravens and gyrfalcons.

On day four and five, strike out across the Denmark Strait to the wild shores of Eastern Greenland. Explore multiple fjords aboard the ship, as well as landings, hiking, kayaking, or Zodiac cruising. Keep your eyes peeled for humpbacks, beluga whales, seals, and the elusive polar bear.

Journey to the Westfjords region of Iceland. You'll enter Ísafjarðardjúp where you'll land at Vigur Island. Visit an eider farm and learn about the traditional eiderdown collection, as well as their bird colonies. On day seven, head to another fjord to spot whales then hike along fjord trails and witness a dramatic waterfall. On day eight you'll disembark in Reykjavík and transfer to the airport before your flight home.

Ship details
National Geographic Explorer carries 148 passengers and a crew of 99. The ship is equipped with a roster of tools for exploration and vast expanses of glass to connect with the environment. This authentic expedition ship is best suited to "true adventurers" (Cruise Critic), and is purpose-engineered for blue water and polar exploration. The ship has an open Bridge, and a Chart Room below with high-perched observation decks. Cruise with a dedicated Expedition Team who will be on hand throughout all Zodiac cruises. Listen to engaging lectures led by a variety of specialists every day.

Onboard there's a lounge and bar with state-of-the-art presentation facilities, a global gallery, and a library. Visit the open-air observation lounge, and use the dual Zodiac boarding platform. Meals are served in the dining room, Bistro bar, or the Observation lounge. There's a single seating for dinner and tables are unassigned for an informal atmosphere.

Category 1 Staterooms feature one or two portholes. All cabins feature a writing desk, floor length mirror, reading lamps, and well-appointed bathrooms with a roomy glass-wall shower.
