Itinerary
Start in Singapore at the 4-star Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium. The hotel is 15 minutes' drive from Singapore's famous Gardens by the Bay. Spend time taking in the city's futuristic architecture and sampling an eclectic mix of cuisines.
You'll then embark on a 12-night cruise aboard Diamond Princess, calling at...
- Port Klang... travel inland independently to tour Kuala Lumpur (excursions at a supplement), capital of Malaysia. Head up to the Batu Caves to see the rainbow staircase and 140-foot-high golden Hindu statue.
- Langkawi... is an archipelago off the coast of Malaysia, and the cruise port is close to Kuah, the main city. Tour the waterfalls and mangrove forests, or take a boat trip to explore.
- Penang... "delivers old-world Asia in spades," says Lonely Planet, "from trishaws pedalling past watermarked Chinese shophouses to blue joss smoke perfuming the air".
- Phuket... "if there's a more thrilling cocktail of Eastern cultures than in Penang, we've yet to find it", says Lonely Planet. The island was once an important trading post, and its kaleidoscopic culture is rich with Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences.
- Koh Samui... visit the Big Buddha Temple or dive in the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand.
- Laem Chabang... this seaport along the Gulf of Siam is the departure point for trips to Bangkok (supplements apply). Spend the day visiting golden temples, floating markets, and exquisite palaces.
