Itinerary
Cruise the Inner Hebrides, the 60-mile Caledonian Canal that features 29 locks, and the mysterious Loch Ness. You'll sail from Oban to Inverness, calling at:
- Tobermory, Isle of Mull… drop anchor at this instant heart-stealer of a town, with colourful waterfront houses, a bijou distillery, and inviting pubs. Visit a nearby dairy farm to taste locally produced cheese, made using fully sustainable methods.
- Craignure, Isle of Mull… join another included tour on land and sea all the way to Iona, known as the birthplace of Scottish Christianity. See an ancient abbey, and soak up the island's atmosphere at serene green meadows and the scenic coastline.
- Corpach… explore the 13th-century Duart Castle, the ancestral seat of the Maclean clan, from Craignure in the morning. Then, sail to Corpach and visit the Glenfinnan Monument, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his Jacobite standard to reclaim the British throne for the Stuarts. The setting on the shores of Loch Shiel is truly beautiful.
- Banavie & Fort Augustus… relax on your luxurious ship as you ascend through Neptune's Staircase. This feat of engineering is made up of eight locks that raise the canal by 19 metres (62 feet) over a quarter of a mile. Continue on Loch Lochy and the Caledonian Canal to Fort Augustus.
- Inverness… sail the deep waters of Loch Ness, and visit Culloden, a powerfully emotive site, where one of the most harrowing battles of British history took place in 1746. You'll also see the evocative Clava Cairns, the 4000-year-old remains of a pre-historic cemetery. Your cruise concludes in Inverness, the northernmost city in the United Kingdom.
Ship details
Lord of the Highlands is a luxurious ship with a "high degree of comfort and service", according to Cruise Critic. It combines modern amenities with the traditional elegance of a Scottish country retreat.
The upper Tweedsmuir Deck has stunning views over the passing scenery through panoramic windows. There's an outdoor terrace as well. It's a great spot to settle down with a Scotch or a glass of champagne in hand. Afternoon tea is served here, too. The onboard Caledonian Restaurant puts a strong emphasis on using the freshest and finest ingredients, and it offers a fine-dining experience.
Cabins are furnished in rich hardwood, and they all have tea-and coffee-making facilities. There are Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom. You'll also get a "wee dram" of bedside whisky, which you can swap for any tipple of your choice, should you wish. Wi-Fi is included.
Life on the ship follows an unhurried, convivial rhythm. An expert guide accompanies the cruise—you'll get shore excursions—and you will often find guest speakers on board. The occasional special events feature local musicians playing Scottish and Gaelic songs. The Captain's Farewell Gala brings on a ceremonial "Address to a Haggis" and bagpipers playing their instruments.
