Top 5 Destinations for Family-Friendly Deals this Summer

18 May 2017

Travelzoo has teamed up with This Morning Live, the first consumer event from ITV’s "This Morning" show, to recommend our top family holiday destinations for summer 2017. Our very own Louise Hodges joined Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield to discuss the best destinations to jet off to this summer.

Here’s a round-up of our top recommendations; Croatia and Montenegro, Greece, Umbria, The Caribbean and European lakes and mountains. Read on to find out why and to see some great deals we have for these destinations.

Croatia & Montenegro

Why we love them: The Croatian currency is the kuna rather than the euro, so you get a little more for your money. Currency aside, Croatia has so much to offer, including delicious seafood, rocky coastline, over 1,000 islands, great swimming spots and beautiful architecture in the cities. Montenegro is often thought of as a playground for the rich and famous, but the colourfully painted villages along the coast are much quieter, friendlier and have a more relaxed feel.

Getting there: You can fly to Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Rijeka and Pula in Croatia from a wide range of UK airports - flights take 2-3 hours. For Montenegro, the flight time is 3 hours to the coastal town of Tivat.

Interesting fact: The food in Croatia is heavily influenced by Italian cooking, but food and drink prices are much cheaper in Croatia. Montenegro uses the euro but isn’t actually part of the EU.

Greece is high on many wish-lists again this summer. With so many islands and areas to choose from, Travelzoo’s deal experts have narrowed it down - we recommend Crete, Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu for family holidays.

Getting there: flights take around 3-3 ½ hours. Greece has more international airports than most countries because so many travellers want to visit from Europe and the rest of the world.

Interesting fact: Greece enjoys more than 250 days of sunshine, or 3,000 hours of sunshine a year.

Don’t let the fact that Umbria isn’t near a coastline put you off. Italians are very child-friendly and as well as all the countryside to explore, there are lots of Medieval towns to venture into, including Assisi and Todi, Perugia, with markets, museums, and some of the most delicious gelato you’ll ever eat. Umbria is a great destination for foodies and is more affordable than its rival Tuscany.

Getting there: flights take approximately 2.5 hours from the UK. Many people fly into Rome and then drive, but a small number of flights go directly to Perugia.

Interesting fact: Umbria is the only Italian region not to have a coastline or border with other countries. This, along with the endless countryside, is why the region is known as “The Green Heart of Italy”.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean is made up of 26 countries, many of which come with their own group of islands, all offering a wide range of activities the kids are bound to love. Our favourites are Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines. Take your pick from snorkelling, beach volleyball, swimming, windsurfing – the list goes on! There are lots of all-inclusive resorts to choose from in the Caribbean, so you can pay for these activities before you arrive and don’t need to worry about getting hit with a large bill on checkout.

Getting there: This depends on the Caribbean destination you are flying to, but it ranges from around 7.5 hours to 11 hours. You can fly into a selection of airports across the Caribbean from several UK airports, including London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Manchester.

Interesting fact: Only approximately 2% of the islands in the Caribbean are inhabited by people

European Lakes & Mountains

A great alternative to the classic beach holiday and the perfect option for active families who enjoy spending time outdoors in beautiful scenery. You can do something different each day, with hiking, rafting, kayaking, horse-riding, biking, swimming in the lakes (and much more) all on offer. A lakes and mountains holiday is great value for money, too. Destinations to consider include Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

Getting there: For Kitzbuhel in Austria, the flighst takes two hours, then a 30-minute drive. To get to Lake Maggiore in Italy, you take a 2-hour flight to Milan and then catch a train, which takes two hours. Flights to Ljubljana in Slovenia take two hours.

Interesting fact: Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It’s often overlooked in favour of Lake Como, where George Clooney famously has a holiday home, but it deserves much more attention.
