Sri Lanka: new roads open up this island paradise

15 Nov 2016

Sri Lanka is packed with beautiful beaches, friendly locals, World Heritage sites and, of course, plenty of wildlife for you to spot on your travels.

Why go in 2017

Huge improvements have been made to the roads in Sri Lanka over recent years, making it far easier to see more of the country on one holiday. This destination is becoming increasingly popular so it’s worth visiting before everyone gets in on the secret.

Insider tip

Hike up Pidurangala Rock for an incredible view of Sigiriya Rock at sunset. It’s opposite Sigiriya, but much less well known so you’ll lose the crowds and get a more private view.

When to go

Sri Lanka has two separate monsoon seasons, making the climate quite complicated, although there is usually good weather somewhere on the island. The best time to visit the south and west coasts are from December to March, and between May and September for the east coast.
