The hotel is lovely and in perfect surroundings. The car park filled up quickly so I can see that being an issue but ai really liked the hotel, the room, the food and the staff

On the first night, we were woken around 5am by a really strong smell of sewage. When we finally realised it was coming from the bathroom we closed the door and opened the window wide. I was physically sick because of it. We reported this in the morning and were told it would be sorted. I asked that, if it wasn't could we change rooms. She said it was unlikely but she would check. When we returned in the afternoon, I asked if the problem had been sorted as I didnt want to be ill again. I still didn't feel well and was exhausted from the night before. The receptionist couldn't tell me but said that she would check and let me know. She didn't so I called while we were out. She said that the manager 'believed that maintenance had gone to the room.' I left my number and asked them to let me know. When we returned to the hotel around 8pm, I again asked at reception if the problem had been sorted. She said that the manager had been busy but he would let me know. I repeated my request that if the problem had not been resolved, could we change rooms as I was so ill. I also said that if it wasn't sorted and we weren't moved, I would be seeking a refund. I still heard nothing so I woke every few hours worrying that the room would smell again. I hardly slept again. The room did not smell as bad again. There was some residual smell but my sleep was disturbed because I was worrying about being ill. If only someone could have reassured me that the problem had been treated.

Burn Hall Hotel is a large, value for money hotel with very pleasant staff and in an ideal location for touring North Yorkshire. The rooms are spacious and clean and lifts are available. The menu is traditional and somewhat limited for vegetarians/vegans but there is always something.
Other Comments
The background music is irritating and could easily be omitted, but only people like me notice it!! Burn Hall attracts a more mature clientele so don’t expect any night life. Having said that the grounds are beautiful and ideal for evening walks.

Lovely hotel. Very warm welcome. Rooms are cosy and clean. Tea & coffee facilities. Flatscreen TV with standard terrestrial channels. Plug sockets on one side of the bed so perfect for my CPAP machine. The hotel caters for disabled guests. Water from the shower was a bit tepid, fortunately, it was a really hot weekend so that didn't bother us too much. There was no air conditioning but there was a sign saying you could ask for a fan. There was a hairdryer in the drawer. Everything we needed for a good stay.

If you want fried or poached eggs with your breakfast ask for them as you enter the restaurant. They can take up to 15 minutes to come at busy periods. If you're planning to go into York whilst there, it's a good idea to drive to the Park & Ride at Rawcliffe Bar and take the bus in. The park & ride is 15 minutes away and the bus takes another 15 minutes. That way you avoid the extortionate parking fees in York. The bus is £4 per person return.

The area is quite rural and the grounds of the hotel are wooded with lawns. Birdlife and wildlife can be spotted which we like. Situated in easy reach for York, Castle Howard, Sutton Hall and Malton ( a foodie hotspot). The hotel itself is a lovely old house with main areas well decorated and kept. The rooms although functional are beginning to show signs of needing an update. While the prices remain very reasonable this is acceptable as long as things are well maintained. The restaurant serves well portioned food so a good appetite is needed. The staff are all hard working and are polite and friendly. Our room on the ground floor was ideally placed for us because of some motability issues. Although there is a lift we didn't need it this visit. Booking in and out of the hotel was quick and problem free.
