"Great location for walks, heritage railway and other attractions, all very close to hand.
Enjoyed the leisure facilities and especially the Afternoon tea and treatments offer.
Great value for the money,"
Dating from Tudor times and a Victorian former mill, The Whitewater Hotel is full of character. The property sits beside the River Leven in the Lakeland village of Backbarrow. Lake Windermere is five minutes' drive away.
The Cascades Leisure Club & Spa "makes the most" of its location (The Times). "There's a striking river view from the pool and loungers".
Climb aboard the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Steam trains depart from Haverthwaite station (15 minutes' stroll away) and chug through the Leven Valley.
The Lakeland Motor Museum is five minutes' walk from the hotel and has an extensive collection that traces 100 years of motor heritage. The Campbell Bluebird Exhibition features replicas of the cars and boats that smashed speed records.
Fell Foot, run by the National Trust, is five minutes' away by car. From the Grade II-listed boathouses, tread beside the water's edge on a heritage trail. Alternatively, take to the water with Windermere Lake Cruises. Departures are from Lakeside Pier, also a 5-minute drive away.

The food was plentiful and good
The rooms were warm

Whole hotel was tired and need of refurbishment
Noise from apartments above
Leisure facilities limited, pool cold and steam room a little dangerous from the steam input
Dining room understaffed a breakfast
Breakfast on last day chaotic - with an hour to go there was no cups, no glasses, no hot water, no milk, no sausages. The staff did their best, but it was not good enough.
The evening meal menu was the same every day, the soup was the same variety daily as were the pies.

Enjoyed the Travelzoo voucher which included a 2 course meal, bottle of wine and overnight in a large room, with a dual aspect view of the river. The bed was comfortable, the shower was hot and there were bathrobes provided. The breakfast was do it all yourself. The plates were cold, so the hot breakfast was spoilt. The gardener chatted to us, telling us about the area. Although the hotel would benefit from a refresh, it did not impact on our enjoyment.

Great location on the banks of the River Leven. We had two nights in an upgraded room with fantastic view out over the river. Our deal included a dinner each night and daily breakfast. All food was excellent. I believed a bottle of wine was included each evening but the hotel told us it was only for the first night. Either way the deal we had was great value for money. We used the leisure facilities, pool and gym which were very good. Staff were helpfull and premises were very clean and tidy. Great stay, thank you.

Staff are helpful but I feel they are under pressure and rubbed off on them when they are working yet there were smoke everywhere. I had a little mishap on my a la carte main dish order but it had been put right promptly. Quantity for any dish were enormous ! We made a little pigs out of that. Over all it was good. Room is difficult to find .. not well sign posted .. we got there eventually.

A young member of staff was being reprimanded on one eve by reception staff, it was a little unprofessional, I was just passing to use the toilet from the restaurant. It would've been more professional to have this conversation in private from guests and generally his wellbeing. Staff were extremely busy in restaurant that eve and the young lad who served us had done everything he could.
That said, I appreciate things have to be dealt with. It didn't make our stay difficult staff need to handle things more professionally.

A lovely well organised Hotel in a quiet location Southern end of the Lakes. Good facilities and staff very helpful and friendly. Rooms very clean and comfortable. Would definitely return for a third visit with travel zoo which was a great deal.

The one issue was the Hotel seemed short on staff but they said they were not down on staff. When one bar was open another was closed and the only barman was serving and delivering drinks in two restaurants as well as both drinking areas on different floors. Another barman would have been better.

We’ve stayed at this hotel previously on a couple of occasions around 6 years ago, the location is great our room was clean & tidy and the colleagues were very friendly. The food was good and the offer with train, boat & museum visits included great value. Some areas of the hotel felt like they needed some TLC, as an example The Dolly Blue Bar needs new chairs inside & areas needed redecorating. The Colleagues work really hard and at times it felt like an extra pair of hands would have helped. The Whitewater is a great hotel, great location but needs TLC in areas to be outstanding.

Fabulous location, room was lovely overlooking the river all we would say needs a bit of modernisation from old mahogany furniture! Food was lovely in the restaurant but again all we would say don’t advertise food on the menu and when it comes it is not on the plate! But over all is was a fantastic deal and would recommend to friends and family!

The food was better than expected, but breakfast could be improved. Toaster on its last legs. So actually had to queue to use it. Could have benefitted from some sourdough to toast & maybe a choice of pastries?

Returned after 30+ years to reminisce. Hotel setting as good as ever. Incredible deal from Travelzoo, with so many additions to the 2-night DBB deal - Haverthwaite and Lakeside railway tickets, South Lakes cruise from Lakeside and tickets to the Lakeland Motor Museum. The only ‘downside’ was the slowness of dinner service on the first night (due to staff shortages apparently). Second night much better though.

Everything you could possibly wish for. However only thing that let it down was what I believe were staff members family of noisy young children for over 5 hours spoilt the ambience. When asked at reception what there policy was on children in bar was informed they were a member of staff’s and they are there every night. Other than the children couldn’t fault the place
