Why We Love This Hotel

  • Located in downtown Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley, this hotel was built in 1913 by French and Italian craftsmen who carved and painted much of the noteworthy features by hand
  • This area combines rich American history with trendy restaurants, a vibrant craft beer scene and a popular riverfront
  • Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library; Hagley Museum & Garden; and Mt. Cuba Center are all within a 15-minute drive from the hotel
  • Stay with confidence — read more about the hotel's enhanced safety and cleaning procedures

Since 1913, Hotel Du Pont, a Historic Hotel of America, has hosted such luminaries as Prince Rainier of Monaco, President John F. Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt. This 4.5-star property is the grand dame of Delaware hotels and sits in the heart of downtown Wilmington.

Guests are welcomed into a lavish lobby that radiates “old school glamour” (Condé Nast Traveler). Everything from the painted ceiling, furnishings and marble walls is posh and art-inspired. Classic King rooms, at 300 square feet, are cozy and styled with Old-World European décor. Upgraded rooms feature a separate sitting area and deep soaking tubs.

The on-site restaurant, Le Cavalier at The Green Room, is the newest addition to Wilmington’s dining scene and honors the deep equestrian tradition in the Brandywine River Valley. Chef-Partner Tyler Akin’s seasonal brasserie menu draws influence from Provence and North Africa and showcases innovative riffs on French classics while emphasizing the abundance of Delaware’s foodways.

The city of Wilmington is small, but it has a vibrant arts and social scene with restaurants, tax-free shopping, and museums and art galleries nearby. The Winterthur Museum and Gardens, a 10-minute drive away, is home to 700 acres of gardens, woodlands and a museum. Be sure to visit the Hagley Museum and Mount Cuba Center all located within a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Was a great location for our trip to see Delaware Shakespeare at Rodney Square. We had breakfast at the restaurant, which was lovely. Also, best night sleep we’ve had in a while!

Our room #521 was lovely - huge bathroom, lovely sitting room area with couch and easy chairs, excellent lighting. All good! Thanks to TravelZoo I even knew to ask for the complimentary macaroons. The hotel itself was gorgeous right down to the new carpet in the hallways upstairs.

Everything was wonderful with one exception. They had run out of the macaroons promised in tbt package. A small detail but handled graciously by staff.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel in the heart of the financial district. While our room was large (luxury king) & clean, it felt dated. The carpet could really stand to be replaced. The bedding was excellent, as were the toiletries. Our room wasn’t ready when we arrived at 4:30 (3pm check-in). The front desk clerk offered us bottled water & “sit & wait in the lobby.” I think they could have offered to stow our luggage & offered a drink at the bar. I understand everywhere is short-staffed due to Covid, but a bit more catering to our needs would have been appreciated. Our dinner at La Cavalier was excellent. The General Manager was attentive, the server friendly & the chef was accommodating to my needs (gluten free).

It was a great experience. The only negatives were information about what the hotel offers and what the surrounding area offers. There were also some small annoyances such as a slow drain, cable TV inadequacies. The room was ultra-clean and the staff was very accommodating but had limited information about eating places and other entertainment venues. The two paper information packets did not offer much help or guidance for forming an entertaining day.
Other Comments
I will definitely visit again. We did not know about the Deco part of the hotel until the end of the second day. If we had known about Deco the first day we would have stayed closer to the hotel for some of our dining purposes.
