Overview

Located at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain, the AAA 4-Diamond Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch resort offers year-round luxury. Set among beautiful yet rustic surroundings, the property is known for its plethora of outdoor activities and top-notch service that makes guests feel at home. The resort is a grand lodge-like building set within the mountain. Guests are greeted at the main entrance by the hotel's St. Bernard, Bachelor.

The resort offers ski-in, ski-out access allowing skiers to glide right off the mountain to the slopeside Daniel's Bar & Grill with an outdoor space with fire pits, live music and barbecues. An in-house ski outfitter can provide clothes, a ski concierge gets equipment ready for guests, and a nanny takes care of kids who are enrolled in ski school so their parents can hit the slopes. Take in the stunning scenery while golfing, fly fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding or white-water rafting (fees apply) during warmer months. Families can make s'mores around an outdoor fire pit and take part in yard games together.

Guest rooms feature feather-top beds and marble bathrooms with deep-soaking tubs and separate rain showers. Many offer panoramic views of the mountains or valley, and some have a balcony or fireplace. They all have upscale decor and modern furnishing with a western theme giving the rooms a rustic yet luxurious feel. Club-level rooms have private balconies and fireplaces and grant guests access to the eighth-floor lounge with a variety of enticing beverages and small bites throughout the day.

Pamper yourself at the Forbes Travel Guide 4-star spa, and dine at three restaurants including Buffalos, a family-oriented casual spot with a warm and cozy atmosphere to share a meal and watch sports with a regional craft beer. There's also a year-round outdoor heated pool, tennis courts and a full Ritz Kids program. Beaver Creek Village is just a 10-minute shuttle away, and Vail Village is 20 minutes away for dining, nightlife, shopping and more.

From the press:
  • "The stone-and-timber resort crowns Beaver Creek Mountain above the bustle of Vail Valley like one of King Ludwig's Bavarian castles. Inside this imposing hotel are amenities fit for a queen or king: panoramic views from most rooms, stone fireplaces in more than a third, and high, plush beds in all" -- Fodor's
  • "It dominates the base of Beaver Creek Mountain, creating a postcard-pretty image as skiers schuss down the corduroy Cabin Fever trail to it, where ski valets stand at the ready" -- Travel + Leisure

The team the Ritz-Carlton hires continues to be superb. Our bellman, Willie, grated us warmly, and graciously offered to help us with anything we needed. Our dinner service in the Great Room was lovely, as our sweet server was very attentive keeping us updated on our order, as the kitchen was busy. She did not need to do that, as we were not rushed, and just enjoying listening to the live music, but it was appreciated. Finally, upon checkout, my husband told reception about the climate control problem in our room, and how I was unable to sleep, subsequently keeping him up most of the night as well. We did not ask for, or expect any compensation, only to make them aware that this may be a problem for guests as temperatures climb entering into the summer months. However, she apologized for our discomfort, and credited us $75 to our final bill. Although we could not get back our night of lost sleep, this was a considerate gesture, and much appreciated. We love the Ritz-Carlton creedo of “Ladies & Gentlemen serving Ladies & Gentlemen”, and believe the Ritz team certainly still embodies that.
Other Comments
My Marriott Rewards number was not attached to my Travel Zoo reservation, so none of my preferences (higher floor, extra towels etc) were known at the time of check-in. I cannot assume that because the front desk specialist saw a “Travel Zoo Special” Reservation, she automatically placed us in a less desirable room, but it definitely was. We were put on the second floor, 2 floors below the main lobby level, which I believe may be the lowest floor of guest rooms. I did not expect to be upgraded, as my Gold Status recently dropped off, but this floor was hot, dark, and felt like a cave. From the beginning, it felt like we were in the bottom of a ship. Since my husband and I had been apart traveling for work, we planned this last minute as a romantic weekend away together to reconnect. Our first room 218, was disappointing, as it looked directly at the asphalt road leading up to the main entrance. We were set back behind tall pine trees, with no view of the hills or the valley, and strangely, there was a dirty plastic grocery bag hanging in the tree directly out the window. I imagine this was trash that fell down from a guest room above. I understand that this is the off season, but this is the Ritz-Carlton, and in my experience at other properties, this room would only be used if the hotel was almost sold out. I don’t know the occupancy for the weekend, but it was definitely not even close to full capacity, as the main restaurant was closed, and we didn’t see anyone else on our floor for the entire time we were there. The front desk agent was kind enough to move us to another room, 223, that had a fireplace, however, this floor was so warm already, that using the fireplace was impossible. I woke up sweating several times to turn down the AC even more, so finally at 2:30 am, when even lowering to 63 degrees was not cooling the room, I called to request a fan. The engineer was apologetic and explained that the machinery running the hotel is located right below our level, so it is hard to keep cool. He turned our thermostat down to 45 degrees, but the room never cooled down enough for me to fall back asleep. The fan helped circulate the air, but it just wasn’t enough. In addition as a side sleeper, unfortunately, our mattress was much too firm, and oddly, the bed skirt was filthy. Also, there was no turn down service. Perhaps it is now something the guest must call to request? Instead we checked into our room around 3pm with the bed already turned down, and the decorative pillow absent. I do not have to have turn down service everywhere I stay, but it is a special luxury, guests come to expect when staying at a Ritz-Carlton. Who doesn’t love returning to their room after dinner to find it refreshed and prepared for relaxation. I have never had these issues with the other Ritz properties we have stayed at, specifically Half Moon Bay & Laguna Niguel were dreams. I can only think that this property had not yet had a chance to rejuvenate after the end of ski season a month earlier.

Lovely resort! Overnight parking, however, @$60 per night plus tax should always be included in the Travelzoo off-season package as should the Resort Fee of $30 per night. These fees, unless they are waived, negate the value of the Travelzoo offer,
