Close to the Appalachian Trail, the Mountain Lake Lodge has been in business since before the Civil War and has welcomed guests since the 1930s.

Movie buffs will recognize the sandstone face of the Mountain Lake Lodge as the resort featured in the film "Dirty Dancing," but in recent years, the Lodge has reinvented itself as an adventure destination. With 22 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, rafting and kayaking on the New River or zip-lining through the treetops, there's lots for guests to explore. Note that a number of activities require additional fees, but complimentary activities include lawn chess, shuffleboard, bocce and use of the newly renovated outdoor pool and hot tub.

Rooms offer king, queen or twin beds. North Side rooms feature views of the property's expansive front lawn, and Suites add a sitting area and jetted bathtub. It's worth mentioning that because the lodge is meant to be a true getaway and an older property, rooms do not include televisions or air conditioners (fans are included in all rooms). However, between exploring the outdoors; dining at Harvest, the farm-to-table restaurant; and chatting around the fireplace in the lobby or over drinks at the Stony Creek Tavern, you should be able to get along without it.

A step back in time with Dirty Dancing movie history...a fabulous setting for hiking and enjoying nature! Loved the back porch off our King room complete with fireplace (albeit unused), microwave and fridge. Thanks for wonderful hospitality in a refreshing environment!

The restaurants were superb. I would recommend to anyone to tour the property for the day and eat in the restaurant. Just do not stay in the lodge!

The front desk and housekeeping staff were not professional and did not do their jobs.

We called the week before to request an early check in, as we were arriving (from Cincinnati) for my mom's birthday at 1pm instead of 4pm. The woman I spoke with (event coordinator) said this wouldn't be an issue and noted it on our reservation. We ended up not being able to check in until after the 4pm check in time, because our room was not clean/ready. While this sucked, and gave a poor first impression, Emily (night staff at the front desk) more than made up for it with her sweet and kind demeanor!

Didn't mind that there was no AC- rooms felt great. Would have been nice to have a mini fridge or a microwave though. Also was unsure about the reusable/refillable shampoo/lotion containers- most hotels that have made the switch have them secured in some way so that they can't be opened by guests and tampered with. It takes a lot of trust to assume that the person in the room before you wasn't a jerk putting Nair or Dye in the bottle!

Beautiful grounds and the main lodge was lovely. Food in the restaurant was delicious and like a high end restaurant at an extremely reasonable cost. We participated in multiple activities through the Outfitters and they were amazing!! The staff really makes this destination a gem! They were all friendly and funny and accommodating.

My husband and I are both vegan. Although they didn't have anything vegan listed on the menu, the staff were more than happy to make us vegan lunch and dinner options which were delicious! Can't wait to go back.
