Very comfortable, well-equipped room and exceptional staff throughout the hotel. I expected it to be an "old" hotel but it is contemporary. Location is spectacular and the deal I purchased included valet parking. The front desk person was also the car parker/retriever but that was never a problem. While I didn't dine in the hotel restaurant, it appeared to be busy and hopping. Next time.

The complimentary buffet breakfast was better than it appeared. Some easy signage and perhaps a garnish or two would have made it much more appealing. However the food quality and variety were fine, as stated, better than they looked. What turned out to be thin, folded cheese omelets looked like crepes so it was a bit confusing!

Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Great location for a walk to the ocean or a chance to check out the shops. (especially Warwick's Books) We appreciated the decor and room layout- nicely done. Special not to the staff - reception, breakfast room, valet, etc. - professional, efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly.
Thanks to Travelzoo, the price was amazing and included breakfast, valet parking, and the dreaded add-on "destination fee". Only fair to mention the hotel is still going through an upgrade (looks great) and you might have some renovation noise during the day.

Very enjoyable experience. Empress Hotel is centrally located within the La Jolla village close to many stores and the water. Interactions with the staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms were clean and no issues even for bigger an older hotel Quiet neighborhood.

We enjoyed our stay at the Empress Hotel. The Travelzoo deal included valet parking which is a must in La Jolla and a delicious buffet breakfast that even had eggs and sausages. The location is amazing and on the 5 th floor we even had an ocean view. We walked everywhere and tried out some great bars and restaurants. Right in the hotel is the Manhattan restaurant and they have a piano bar. The music and the food were really great. The only negative is that the rooms are a little run down. All staff members were very kind and helpful.
