"Britain's littered with beautiful cities, but precious few compare to Bath", says Lonely Planet, thanks to "some of the nation's grandest Georgian architecture" and "one of the world's best-preserved Roman bathhouses". The Abbey Hotel and its award-winning restaurant are in the centre of the city, close to the Roman Baths, Thermae Spa, Bath Abbey and the shopping area.

The 3-AA-Rosette Allium Brasserie offers a menu from chef Chris Staines that "holds the attention from the start, with its eccentric line-up of co-star ingredients", says The Independent, adding that the miso-cured Loch Duart salmon is "the softest salmon that's ever touched your lips." The menu changes often in order to use the best seasonal produce.

ArtBar & Lounge serves afternoon tea with homemade cakes, scones and biscuits.

Rooms come in a range of sizes, from cosy Small Double Rooms to Family Rooms that come accommodate an extra bed or cot. Wi-Fi is free.

As part of a collaboration with Kings Road Art Gallery and Modern ArtBuyer, the hotel exhibits modern art in the lounge, reception, rooms and Allium Brasserie.

The dinner was very good. I would eat there but not stay again!

The hotel was undergoing refurbishment. It is a pity we weren’t told about this. We I commented on this, I received a very defensive response: “it’s better than staying at a scruffy hotel”. Not very professional. Whilst the dinner was excellent, breakfast was a bit disappointing, as was the service that morning.

Location was great, with good parking nearby. Room had a lovely outlook. Comfortable beds and good bathroom facilities. Both evening meal and breakfast choices were excellent and food was well presented and delicious.

Location excellent

We were not warned that major improvement works were going on in the hotel which caused some inconvenience. The bar was in progress of being refurbished and there were workmen all over the place. Reception moved around a lot and it was sometimes difficult to find staff. Despite having booked our dinner for the second night the hotel did not seem to know about this but fitted us in. Worse, they wanted to charge me for it when it was included in the package. Whilst I thought the hotel OK, staffing was erratic and there were too many stairs and corridors leading to the bedrooms. Parking at Southgate CP was excellent with ticketless entry and exit and it felt secure.

The service at breakfast was dreadful the tea and coffee were both served cold the coffee had coffee flakes floating around in it which was replaced the breakfast was very good the waitress asked us several times for our cooked order before we had chance to have fruit and cereals and when we finally ordered had disappeared completely the dinner and service in the evening was amazing we were not informed that building works and renovations were being carried out during our stay which spoilt the experience
